Any tall golfers here?

I know everyone has their own idea of what "tall" is. I'm 6'3", and I guess I would consider myself fairly tall. I have a couple of questions for you "tall" folks.

1) Are your clubs lengthened?

2) Have you ever taken lessons, and because of your height, were told do something different than another golfer would? (i.e. bend more from the hips, widen your base, slightly push your knees and hips towards the target at address, etc etc).

I've seen it referenced in many places that taller golfers, in general, sometimes struggle with excessive, unneeded body movement. Especially in the lower body.

Just wondering what some of you tall, lanky S.O.B's do to keep your swing consistent.

You should get your clubs fitted it will make the game much easier for you.
As far as excessive movement goes, because you probably have longer arms and legs any excess movement is "amplified" so that will make it harder to hit the ball consistently.

As mentioned, fitting is the best option. Realize that the length of the club is usually more based on the length of your wrist from the floor and not your height. So you could be 6'10" and still use a shorter shaft if you have lanky arms. I am 6'1" and use a standard club.

If you decide not to get fitted, you can at least get a static fitting off some of the websites like PING : Play Your Best, where it will ask you the length of your wrist to the floor and give you a rough idea of not only shaft length but lie. If you do require a longer shaft, then fitting is definitely the way to go as it usually costs no more and it would be that or paying to have shaft lengthener's added to your clubs. You may also find for being taller that you will generally require a more upright lie as well, which will likely have more negative impact with being wrong than too short a shaft. Again, at 6' 1", I have a standard length shaft, but my clubs are about 1* upright to most, although standard in the Mizuno as they are 3/4* upright from many standard clubs in lie.

I have a close friend who is 6'7".

His clubs are only 1/2 inch longer but 3 degrees upright. He played for years with standard length clubs and only went to a 1/2 inch longer club recently.

It is all an issue of relative arm length as described above...the only way to answer it is by working with a qualfied professional clubfitter...

King Par is an unknown quantity at this point
I'm 6'6'' at 15 years old. Playing standard length/lie for now, only reason being is that I want to buy a good quality set first. Should be sometime next month.

1) My clubs are fitted.

2) No lessons because of my height, ideally, if clubs are fitted, that shouldn't matter.

Thin shots means you are not maintaining your spine angle no matter what the length of your clubs.

I'm 6'5". My clubs are +1/2" with roughly 2* upright. (I say roughly because I dynamically fit all my clubs. Some may be 1*, others may end up 2.5* as long as the tape is ripping in the middle)

Get custom fit by a PCS Class A clubfitter. It is easiest on the clubfitter to just buy all new sticks through them. But, if you just "have" to have "name brand", a clubfitter should be able to retrofit you. It is a lot more work though.

In so far as the swing goes, if you read Jim Hardy's, either "Plane Truth" or "Master Class" you will find out the difference between 1-plane and 2-plane. I tried to go to the 1-plane swing because it's just a lot simpler. Unfortunately, bending your back over at 45* in order to get your shoulder line "in the zone" is just damn near impossible. 1-plane is better left to the shorter guys. Like Hogan.

Now that I know that the 1-plane is going to be too difficult, I can use Hardy's procedures for the 2-plane swing in order to weed out 1-plane tendencies in my "normal" swing. By focusing on what a 2-planer "ought" to be doing, it should increase consistency.

Give Hardy's book, or books, a read. If the 1-plane swing is too difficult because of your height, focus on doing the 2-plane correctly.

6'2". My wrist to floor measurement at 34.5" puts me in the standard range. Short legs, long body and arms.... no doubt that I'm in the primate family.
