I completely agree, and we shouldn't be surprised. There's an incredible wealth of young talent out there, but there's no time to cover any of it between hourly updates on Woods' practice rounds and rehabilation. The trend toward cults of personality in this country is really scary; there are hundreds of good and bad politicians that should be talked about, but our media can only focus on Obama's basketball game and his wife's wardrobe.

Between McIlroy, Lee, Ishikawa ( and Kim and Johnson ) you'd think someone would notice. Danny Lee is one of the best teenagers ever, but not the even the best right now. Ishikawa is a distant third and still scored an invite to the Masters (!).

How many of your guys were at Dubai? Looked like a pretty strong field to me.

    Here's a prime example.

Dustin Johnson... ranked 40th in the world.

    Resume:
1 year, 2 months on PGA Tour.
2 Wins - One in a fall event.. one Pebble Beach very strong field.
    5 Top 10 finishes
    10 Top 25 finishes
Currently second in the Fedex Cup standings.

All that... and 40th in the world? And you really think Rory deserves his number 17? Please. Sorry but as good as Rory is and as much talent as he has... Dustin has accomplished more. If Rory was 35 years old he would be just another good player lost in the shuffle.

Again... don't get me wrong.. I think Rory has mad skillz... I think he's very mature for 19... but I think he's way... waaaaaaaayyyy over-hyped. Just like Sergio was... just like I think Anthony Kim is. Kim.. another very GOOD golfer.. but the next Tiger Woods he is not.

One win, one loss in a playoff, and a ton of top tens, on a Tour that is arguable more difficult without Tiger in the mix. I think the word ranking is deserved now that he has won. I didn't get to see him play at the Accenture, but looking at his cards shows that he posted a lot of birdies, and made few mistakes. The way he would come on strong at the end of the rounds made a statement to me about his desire to win. Remember, Ogilvy had to birdie his last three holes to close him out. I feel that that was impressive.

We have heard all of this before, however. A young Sergio Garcia/ Justin Rose received all the same accolades. I think some are treading lightly because of that. One thing I do know, time will tell. I wish him the best. He seems to have a good head on him.
I agree with this post, a win a couple of losses in playoffs, a bunch of top 10's. He just ran in to a shit hot ogilvy, who would have beaten anyone in the field. IMO Rory warrants his place in the OWGR remember they are done over a two year period and rory has simply been one of the best golfers around the past year. I don't think some people ever come round to the face as to how good he is because all they ever follow is TIGER! He played some great golf this week and did himself proud on his debut in America.
Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing.

Okay, you are only 49 short of listing 50 golfers better than McIlroy.

And for the record, Dustin Johnson has 4 top 10s since late '07. During the same time frame, he has 13 missed cuts ( which as far as I can tell, are the real ranking killers ). Also he has eight finishes of 40 that were so low he collected zero points, the same as an MC. That's over half his events at zero points!

For comparison, McIlroy has five top 5s __in this last seven starts__. And 10 over roughly the same time-frame as Johnson's four.

    Who are your other 49?

I'm not saying Rory should be #1, but there are not many better right now, and definitely not 50.

Not only is he better now than Justin Rose was at a similar age ( Rose MC'd his first 21 events ), he's better than Rose right now. You have to go back to '07 to find Rose's last five top 5s... and of course, McIlroy just beat him in Dubai.
