FedEx Cup - 1st ever Playoff's???

So how does it work out then? This is what I know...

The top 144 players in the points listing Qualify for the 1st event. The Top 120 then go to the next event, then it's whittled down to 70 then finally the last 30. The winner of the last 30 then wins the FedEx cup & $10 Million that goes with it.

So if this is a seeded event, which I read somewhere it is, then how does he who qualified #1 on the listings gain advantage over he who qualified 144th in the listings, if it's a stroke play event?

Or if the 144th place qualifier hits form he's got as much chance as the 1st seed to win the thing? How cool would it be if the 144th qualifier finished 120th in the 1st event, 70th in the 2nd, 30th in the 3rd and went on to win the Final. How much would $10 million lift somebody in the world rankings, if lefty or Jim win how much would it close the gap on Tiger?

I can't wait for this to start, hopfully it will be on SKY or I will have to invest in Sentanta.

I think that's the way the format works...not certain though.

I'm glad that the concept of a post-season playoff was conceived though. I think it will add a lot of interest that used to tail off after the last Major...and $10M is a lot of $$

I hope Tiger donates the $10M if he wins it, or at least shifts it to his foundation.

MG,

The eliminations during the playoffs are still based on points from the looks of things. So if you go in at 144 and finish in the top 120 you still may not move on to the next week. Whoever is number 1 will start with 100,000 points and number 144 will have 84,700. That will be a pretty big hill to climb. From what I have seen on the GC you will need to be in the top 50 or so to have a legit chance.

He donates way more than that to his charity each year, even if he doesnt do it publicly his money apparently gets poured into his foundation.

Not in the grand scheme of things, but people will be paying a lot more attention to tournaments like Barclays and Deutsche Bank because of it. Both Phil and Tiger skipped the Tour Championship last year and that's far less likely to happen with $10M at stake.

Obviously Woods does since he's committed to play. No Woods and FedEx doesn't work.

I agree with Lyle.

YAWWWWWNNNNNN.

So there'll be a little more hype, I watch golf cuz i love golf, not because of the gimmick that is the Fedex cup. If they didnt put the 10M$ on this than it wouldnt be near as hyped, theyre fueling it with money, then how they got Tiger is; "Don't ya wana be the first to win the PGA playoffs...."

I wont pay any more or less attention than I do every year, although I always watch every year anyway, so it's no different to me.

I read somewhere that's it's $10M in deferred compensation so they won't get it all at once. More than likely an annuity. It's lets the PGA tour hype the prize amount without having to come up with the whole amount.

If they can attract the top players it will help late season ratings though.

That's right -- it's an annuity, not like they are giving them a check for $10M. If they were doing that then I could probably get excited about the whole Fed-Ex Cup thing. There would be some serious pressure playing for a $10M check, about like playing for a major title I'd think.

"Hey, I just missed a 3 footer for $10M!"

The whole point of it is to interest people NOT like you - people who don't care about anything but Tiger, Phil, or the Majors. People who abandon the golf networks (and their sponsers - ding, ding, ding...) after the PGA, and really, after The Open, since the PGA is considered a "ho-hum" event by so many.

Tiger historically quits playing much after the majors. He's playing a lot more this year. The networks are hoping (praying) that viewership, which has been dismal over the last few years, will go up. That's all the Cup is about. Money.

I'm like you, I'll watch golf whenever golf is on TV - I don't care who's playing. But the networks won't show it if enough people don't watch it, so I'm hoping the Cup does what they want it to.

And to make it even more boring, it's an annuity that gets paid into their retirement account.

I think it seems contrived and the way the Golf Channel has hyped it has been overblown. Having said that though, the commercials are great.

The Immelman one where he is talking into the shampoo and Vijay catches him is funny. Tiger whistling, "Eye of the Tiger", is great although I don't believe he whistles that well. Sergio with Albert Pujols and the rally cap cracks me up too. I have only seen the Phil Simms and Jerome Bettis spots once or twice and don't really remember them.

I will watch some of it though. The best players playing the best players gets my attention, whether or not I buy into the whole playoffs idea is to be decided.
