Breaking my own rule

For the past five years, I have had a personal rule about not playing afternoon golf in the summer. It's just too damn hot. My regular group is a morning group anyhow and we play 12 months a year in the morning. In the winter - that can be a bit chilly on the front side...

Well - from time to time - the guys will sneak out on a Thursday afternoon and play at about 1:30...I'm going along today.

I've got to bathe in sunblock and drink a quart of gatoraide before setting foot outside. High of 94f/34C with high humidity....gawd.

Our course has two 'huts' - one on the front and one on the back. Each hut has bathrooms and a front porch. There's a commercial ice machine on the porch and this year they added freezers that have frozen towels in them. I love the towels....Wet 'em down and drape it around the neck.

Well enough of the pre-broil report...I haven't played in two weeks due to funerals. I'll see how the rust shakes off....

Best of luck, stay cool! Your over in Alabama right? I have relatives on the fathers side that used to live in Opelika. All I remember growing up on the family trips is the heat and what seemed like an abundance of red clay type substrate.

At least you can swing today, having terrible rain here in Florida right now.

Peace, Bryan

Are the freezers big enough for someone to crawl into?

I here you, it has been pretty miserable here lately; I'm talking low 80s with humidity as high 50%...

Good luck out there. I have decided to take the month of August off of golf. The heat has been killing me the last couple of rounds.

Do you guys in warmer climates take time off? Do you have a peak play time or is it fairly steady throughout the year?

I live in Southwestern Ontario, which is a fairly mild climate by Canadian standards (the lower mainland and island in B.C., would get the least snow). We can play from April-November most years, but it is best from May-August.

The days are great in the fall, but there can be a ridiculous number of leaves on the ground where I live.

Just wondering? Thanks.

We play year round here. Most of the year it is beautiful but the summers are brutal. Since I haven't taken any time off over the last year I am going to use the next month as my "winter". My swing is all messed up and it might actually help my game to take the time off.

I play year round in Florida.

From June 1 through September 30 I won't tee off after 8:00am. Prefer to get off at the crack of dawn since it's just too brutally to spend more than two hours in the sun after 10:00am.

I hit the range after 6:00pm.

Sure wish they woul;d flip the DST thing around 180-degrees. I would love to see the sun go down at 7:30 in the winter, and 7:30 in the summer, instead of the 6:00 winter / 9:00 summer BS we have now. Give me some time after work in the winter, when the weather is nice....

I like to tee off before 6:00 am in the summers. Believe it or not it was above 100°F here in No. Dakota with humidity near 90%. The morning is the only way to go.

Our track has 3 bir orange water coolers (locked up, so there is no access to anythign but the spout) with ice water in them on holes 4,7,12 and 16. These babies are life savers somedays. I usually start the day with a water baottle full of gatorade with a pack of Amino Vital in it, and just refil it at the coolers. I have another dose of the Amino vital on the 12th. Keeps me sharp on the last few holes.

I prefer to tee off in the evening - it doesn't get dark until about 9 here, so I can get off at 6 and get in an easy nine holes. I'm not a morning person even if you offered me a free putter that automatically fixed pulled and pushed putts, and auto-corrected the speed. Occasionally I'll hit the tee box for an 8-ish tee time, but other than that, I'm dead in the water.

Maybe I'm a nut-case, but I'll hit the course for 9 holes in the afternoon heat. Just take plenty of Gatorade (my course has water coolers on every tee box), and take your time.

Played 9 today, in fact, in the 95 degree heat. Try getting in your car after a round with no air conditioning. Now that is the cooker.
