What kind of sand is used in bunkers?

I seen a sand at walmart that was called coral sand and it kind of looked like the sand used in bunkers. I was thinking of making my own bunker at my home, could I use this coral sand?

It depends on how soft the sand is, and how deep your bunker is guna be i guess. In reality you could go to the beach with a garbage bag or two and fill up for free

I dont believe any particular type of sand is used, it's just wats available and how hard/soft the designer wants it to play. I'd suggest getting softer or harder sand to fit what you play normally though.

oh ok thanks, i live in Hawaii so i may just go to the beach and get some free sand lol. I was just concerned about sand eating away at my clubs if it were too coarse.

Taking sand from beaches without permission is actually illegal.

Were I come from anyway.

I'd check that out first.

Why not just go to Home Depot and buy some sand?

I've never played golf in Hawaii. Is the sand you see in bunkers similar to the sand by the beach?

Here's an option...

Try going to a redi-mix concrete facility and see if they have any white sand.
Totally different from beach sand.
If it is the same consistancy you're looking for it will be much cheaper as they usually sell it by the ton.
Just a thought.

P.S.- Plus it's legal!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies and no the sand on the courses look different from beach sand. The sand that I seen at walmart looked somewhat similar to the bunker sand. It was $5 for a 30lb bag and I'd imagine that I would need about 10 bags or more to make a decent size bunker.

Most courses use whatever sand is easily available locally. That could be various types of beach sand (coral sand is a type of beach sand found where there is a coral shoreline), or it could even be a pretty coarse, almost gravelly sand. Just depends on what's easy to get and use.

It's most only the more pretentious, high dollar courses that would spend the money to import something that no golfer wants to get too close to anyway.

That would only be 300 lbs. of sand.
I probably have at least that in my daughters sand box.
Seriously!
If you take my advice about buying it in bulk you can figure out the dimensions of the bunker, width x lenght x depth, they can tell you how many cubic yards of sand you need then break that down to tons.
Trust me, it'll be a Hell of alot cheaper!
