Who needs a wedge....

.........when you have a 7i?

I'm chipping great with this thing...If I could learn how to putt, I might be dangerous.

My best shot of the day.
I landed the ball off the green, behind a little hill.

I chipped it over the hill with the 7i, right to the other side.

I thought I hit it short, and was just about to call myself an idiot, when the ball started to roll off the otherside of the hill, kept rolling towards the hole, untill it came to rest in the bottom of the cup.

What an awsome feeling.

The 7i is a really handy club for short game. Under a tree but only 50 out? Use the 7.

Sitting on top of long grass and you want a bump and run? 7 iron.

Caught your wife cheating when you get back from golfing? Use the 6, easiest club to replace.

I also started using a 7i or a 9i for short chips and it's great, I was off the green about 20 feet to the hole the other day and I made it from there! it's great, I used to try to hit it in the air with a LW.

Please tell me though, that you're using it on the wife and not the strange man. Because if you beat the snot out of the man, the wife will just find another man. Get her!

I don't use anything stronger than a PW for my chips. On all my chip and pitch shots, the ball comes out low and hot, which basically means I can bump and run with a PW, and to pitch the ball, I have to use the 56 or a 60. I don't even touch the 7 iron unless I've got 80+ feet of green to work with - the ball rolls that far with a 7...

Great shot. Your first chip in?

Once you get to playing more, get more feel for chipping, you'll find you can chip with about any iron depending on the distance and speed you want. I use primarily a 50* gap wedge. I sort of use that as the standard and will drop to a PW or 9iron for longer and uphill as well as go up to a 58* for shorter and downhill ones. I try to just pick a spot and make an imaginary circle about a foot in diameter. If I can hit that spot I'm usually tapping in or doing that "chip in dance" you learned today.

Just my humble opinion here, but my older brother (short game wizard, mainly coz he couldn't hit the ball out of his own shadow) taught me at a very early age that every club in the bag is a weapon for chipping.

Pick the right situation to play it and easy ups and downs are the result.

I've holed chips with 3 irons, 5 irons and 7 irons, 2 woods, you name it.

Seriously, next short game practice session, have a few chips with your 3 iron and 5 iron, and even woods and you'll be surprised at the results.

Just my $.02

Chipping with a 7 iron is the easier to master than chipping with a wedge, especialy a lob wedge. It gets the ball on the ground quicker. I use a 7 iron for most chips except when shortsided or i have to get over a bunker or mound.

Last week I started using a hybrid to chip out of heavy rough around the green. Sunday I holed one out from 20 yards off the green for my first eagle of the year.
