Ok..How did this happen?

I low teed a 3 wood on a par 3, 168 yards

Gets up in the air, and hits the green.
I thought for sure, that its really going to just keep rolling right to the other side, but for my amazement ,the ball dropped, and stuck 11feet(yes I measured it) from the pin.

I didnt think you could make it stick with a 3 wood.

(Sadly I 2 putted for a par) would have been my fist birdie ever!

I used to do that with my 3 wood, when I had a steeper angle of approach for all of my swings (even driver).. Basically I was chopping down onto the ball, and even with a 3 or 5 wood, I got alot of height, and usually the ball would stick within 5 feet of where it landed. Im not a long hitter, my 3 wood now carries about 200, but on a long par 3, with water in between, id probably go with a three-quarter 3 wood and chop down on the ball.

3 Woods also, generally, generate at least some backspin.

Mine, when hitting the green, never rolls.

im still trying to get my first birdie, ive had chances at this par 3 course but my putting was like i had a bucket on my head. So at worst a flippin 5 putt, although i have had 2 pars. ( Ive been playing since April) . But good luck with getting that birdie.

Welcome to the Five-Putt club. I did that during my club championship on my way to an ugly 94.

As to making a 3 wood stick, well, it depends on how much backspin you put on the ball. Since you didn't hit it very far, I'm guessing you hit the ball pretty high, and probably hit down on the ball. The only time I've had a 3 wood stick anywhere is when it plugs... mine rolls a mile.

Edit: Don't worry about the 168 yard 3 wood. I've seen people who can't hit it 150 and still shoot in the 80's. They hit it straight as an arrow, and never lose a ball. It's not how far, but how many. (To an extent...)

I've been playing a few months as well now,
Made like 5 pars...never 2 in one round, yet I have come close...Its that dawg darn putting thing.

My goal right now is to try and not to get anything over a double bogey.

I always seem to have one or 2 fall apart holes, like making a 10, or 12.

Cool

well im a freshman in high school so im happy to hit my 5 iron over 150, but my longest drive was a whopping 215 yds, on a weird closed face fading drive, that somehow ended up in the middle of a fairway. Of course it was a par 4 and i just needed a like 140 5 iron to get a GIR. I skulled it and got a double bogey

Hey, the day you figure out how to putt, let me know. If I could putt worth a lick, I'd be scratch overnight.

And blowup holes...ugh, do I know about those. I'm a birdie-making machine, but then I cough up a quad and erase them all away.

Sorry.
actually that would be the 7iron range..

but seriously, i doesnt matter what club you hit to get there, as long as you get there.. if im 5ft away with a 3 wood from 150, or 5ft away with an 8iron from 150 im happy..

Is this because of the spin or the trajectory that it comes in on, My new Vsteel got the ball to stop within 10ft and I was amazed at that.
