Hmmm. I'd say it's best just to buckle down and read the rule book, as much as it sucks.

Oh, and if you can't find the ball, to my recollection, you have to play another from the tee. Unless there is a hazard, which you believe it went into. Then play that accordingly.

3 off the tee or from the original spot for non tee shots like Jeff said, and you would have to have reason to believe it went in a hazard if there is one.

Lost Ball - (27-1) Play a ball from where it was last hit (in your case, the tee box) and take a stroke. Hitting 3. Unfortunately.

Unless there's reasonable evidence it was lost elsewhere (in an obstruction, in a hazard, in a gopher hole, etc.), in which case there's different procedures.

The Rules of Golf | United States Golf Association

Or you can buy the book - really cheap, like $3 or $4 at most stores. It's only like 60 pages. Good to keep in your bag. (Creative interpretation of the rules can save you half a dozen strokes per round, guaranteed).

Basically put, mark your ball, repair the pug/plug/divot (whatever they're called in the US) as best you can and play the putt from there. No penalty, but make sure you repair the mark fairly well otherwise the ball will jump out of the hole when you putt.

i would also recommend moving the mark over 1 putter length while you are repairing the ball mark, just so you dont get wild and fling the marker over or something like that.

edit to clarify- with moving it back 1 putter length as well.. if you dont move it back 2 stroke penalty.

A ball embedded in its own pitchmark in a closely mown area through the green (tee box, fairway, green) can be lifted, cleaned, and relief taken without penalty.

what do you mean "relief"?? does that mean i can drop it, no closer to the hole, in order to get out of the line of the pitch mark?

Yes - drop the ball at the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole. This usually means just to the side of the pitchmark you made. If the ball embeds again when you drop it, you are probably in an area of casual water, and should test that, since it would give a broader area of relief.

Actually through the green does NOT include the putting green or the teeing area of the hole being played.

Quote:
Through the Green
“Through the green’’ is the whole area of the course except:
a. The teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played; and
b. All hazards on the course.
If your ball is embedded on the putting green, you don't drop it to take relief, you do as Lefty Hoges said. All other areas through the green you may lift, clean, then drop the ball as near as possible to the point where it it was embedded. If it rolls back into the same position, you redrop it, and if it rolls back a second time, you place it where it first hit the ground on the drop. You do NOT repair the pitch mark until after you play your shot.
