Any good swing thoughts or drills for a "inside-out" swing?

Being a newbie to this game, I suffer from the most common golf disease: the dreaded Slicus Maximus. yes folks, I am incredibly adept at hitting fairways with my swing....too bad its usually the fairway running parallel to the right of the one I am teeing up on!!

Yes I know it can be attributed to a multitude of things in my swing (grip, stance, takeaway etc etc). But all those things being relatively within acceptable parameters, the main reason is because I come "over the top". So the cure is coming from the inside. And to do this, I'll practice exaggerating the inside path just to get my body to accept it.

But I feel that if exaggerate things and swing really from inside out, I'll push it straight out to right. I also realize that with a proper release of the club, the ball will come back around with a nice draw.

See I know all this. But were things get out of wack is the fact that I understand the theory, can't seem to execute it.

So any advice on drills or swing thoughts that will help me ingrain a proper inside out path?

Desperately need it!

one that has worked for me is pretty simple.just imagine another tee and ball a few inches ahead and a few inches right of your tee ball.then swing thru hitting both balls this should give you an inside to out side path.(of course this is for a right if your a lefty do the opposite.)

the visual should look something like this.

that works for me as far as drills there are many but i`ll leave that up to some of the other guys who actually use drills.im not a range person so im not to keen on all the drills.

These helped me:

"hit through the ball and NOT to the ball"

"imagine hitting a line drive between first and second base"

Both work...

The "first-base second-base" idea is great.

I'm amazed at how hard it is to hit the ball to the right when you try to hit the ball to the right.

I also like Harvey Penick's drill:

Do this 15-20 times every night.

Take a slo-o-o-o-ow swing to the top. Then slo-o-o-o-owly bring your right elbow down to your right hip. Keep your left arm straight and hold your wrist angle. Stop when the shaft is parallel to the ground. Reset and do it again.

The slower, the better.

I've done two things to my swing over the last 3 days that literally made me 100% better.

a.) Keep your right elbow against your side through the downswing and into your release. If you start your downswing with your lower body, this should not be particularly difficult. This WILL keep your swing on line, or coming from the inside; the first step of the draw.

b.) Do NOT pull your left shoulder back, or up, in order to accelerate the swing. I was doing this chronically, and I realised it while chipping. Take some practice swings and keep your left shoulder relaxed and on plane. It made a huge, IMMEDIATE difference for me.

Take a few minutes to get a feel for doing both of these things, and you should be hitting draws. Lead with the left arm to keep the club on-line through the release, but don't pull the lead (left) shoulder around.

Let me know how it goes. I have a BLAST at the range now. Crisp, consistent contact

thanks for the tips fellas. I'll be sure to try them out....i am sure one of them will work.

another one I got from somewhere that sounds interesting and I will give a try is: "imagine there is a hockey net 10 feet away and you are tying to pick the top right corner."

Oddly enough seems to ring a cord for me. I guess its cause I do play hockey a lot and I can visualize that image. I'll still have to go and try it out at the range.

Sometimes I wish I could just pick up a phone and say: "Tank, I need you to load me up with the Golf program". lol

what has helped me is imagining that my club is a heavy sack and swing the club back like i would a heavy sack. Imagine that the sack is actually in front of you and then pulling the sack straight back to gain momentum to swing it forward to launch it....make sense? lol anyways that has helped me with my back swing and then I did the swing between first and second base thing.

Here is yet another tip that has worked

that you might try. For wood shots, address the ball with the toe of the club behind the center of the ball, rather than the middle of the club. Next, imagine yourself looking down on the ball. The target line comes through the ball at three and nine o'clock. A line perpendicular to the target line, comes through the ball at twelve and six o'clock. When you attack the ball, try making contact at the center of the back, bottom quadrant (half-way between three and six o'clock). One has to come from the inside to make contact there.

If you end up pushing the ball, you need to allow the toe of the club to pass the heel. If you come too far from the inside so that you have to flip your wrists over quickly to have a chance to square the clubface, you might try taking the club back straighter and longer from the ball as you begin the back-swing.

Just aiming at that point between three and six o'clock has changed several slicers I have known into players with the nicest little draw.

Good luck. CP

interesting that this thread came back up...

I was practicing at a facility near my home when the owner (who is also thier lead instructor) happened to be there just chatting it up with the patrons. He and I usually get along pretty well; so what started as common conversation became a free 20 min lesson.

He did two moves (without saying anything) and it was like a switch went off in my head. He didn't even have to explain...he just did two movements: one was the correct one and one that I was doing incorrectly, and things became quite clear to me!

Basically, on the first move down should be the lower body right? Well, he was showing me that my first move down was the shoulders almost at the same time as my lower body....if not sooner than my lower body. When I do that, I have almost no chance of coming from the inside.....which is why all those swing thoughts that everyone keeps giving me was not working for me. Coming down with my shoulder first meant I started with the club already on the outside. And while I know well enough NOT to do that, I could not see/feel myself doing that because I was doing it at the same time as unwinding the lower body.

The next movement he showed me was what the proper one was. He flipped back and forth between the bad version and the good version rapidly a few times. That really helped me SEE the difference. I could see that if I focused more on starting with my lower body and then letting my shoulders UNCOIL/UNWIND due to the lower body move (as opposed to turn fist), there was almost no way to come from the outside (unless of course one does something really stupid).

So basically, no more swing thoughts about how to approach the ball....the only ONE swing thought in my head now is to make sure the lower body starts first for me; which pretty much takes care of everything else naturally. With enough ingraining of that, hopefully that will no longer be a "thought".

I guess there is a reason that he is the head instructor!

Start the downswing with the left foot being planted back on the floor,THEN the right elbow coming back into the side, all nice and smooth

cypressperch's tip of lining the toe of the woods to the center of the ball really helped me. I was having a lot of trouble hitting my 3w straight but today I was hitting it fairly straight or with a slight draw. Thanks alot.
