I got out yesterday afternoon and played a very nice round with
youngun5. We played a local county Parks & Recreation Dept. course, Tomahawk Hills, which is located conveniently between the two of us and we've both played there many times before.
It's the oldest public course in the Kansas City and it was built in 1926. It's old school -- not real long, very hilly, lots of trees and small-ish greens. The course was in nice shape considering the past several weeks of very hot weather with little rain. The greens were holding and putted very well.
It was a beautiful day, in the low-mid 80's and a fairly mild breeze as opposed to the usual southern gale we get here in the summer time. Later in the round we saw about a half dozen deer, a woodchuck and a couple of turkeys. I had my camera with me but didn't take any pics -- I was just enjoying the round so much I totally forgot about it.
I played with him once before earlier this year but we both played much better this time. We got out just ahead of a high school girls team and got around the course very quickly, about 3:15, which is about the quickest round I've played all year.
Ok, so the scoring... he played from the tips and I played from the regular tees. He shot a very smooth 73 and left a couple shots on the course. The kid can play, I will tell you that. He's got a beautiful swing and strikes the ball very consistently. The heavy putter was working for him and I can't remember him missing much of anything under 10 ft. His new shafts all seem to be working well for him too.
You guys will have to ask him about his 2nd shot on #10, a par 5, with his Cally Heavenwood hybrid. He may want to tell that story himself.
As for me, I shot a crowd pleasing 84.
I had my usual 4 or 5 mishits but also had about 4 or 5 putts I missed that I'd usually make. I was trying a new blade putter and that didn't turn out so well. The regular B-3 heavy mallet is going back in the bag! Overall I struck the ball well, didn't drive the ball real well but stayed out of serious trouble all day. I could have easily had an 80 with halfway decent putting, usually a strong suit for me. My bag is pretty much set now and I'm starting to get in a groove with all the new sticks I've added this year. It's all hopefully small tweaks now and grooving the swing.
Overall, a great day. I needed the day out of the office and it was a great way to spend the afternoon.
