Planning a thrifty Pinehurst area Golf Trip

Help me out if you can. My group is thinking of going to the Pinehurst area next year for our annual Golf Trip. It is about a 12 hour drive from where we live.

They are far too thrifty to pay the big ticket wanted by Pinehurst itself. I am thinking of Tobacco Road (which I have played), Tot Hill Farm and The Pit.

Can anyone give me some help with accommodations and other course recommendations? I have emailed a number of sources in the area, but they have been lousy with responded.

We are likely looking at three or four days in the area with 5 or 6 rounds.

Thanks, as always.

I played Mid-Pines a few years ago and found it overpriced. Wanted to play Pine Needles, but was undergoing a reno.

Mid-Pines is a classic, but I preferred the Duke course, Finley course and Tobacco Road. The guys I play with always aim for the cheap side. Thanks for the tip anyway.

SV, if you want to play an inexpensive, tight muni course try Sanford Golf Course. It's an old Donald Ross design, par 71, whites are 5800, blues are 6300, small greens, some tight fairways, under $30.

A Google search will give you some info.

It's not a Pinehurst course, but it is a fun little course. It's a thinkers course...you'll only use driver 3 or 4 times on the front, 5 on the back, and some of those will require good control.

I'm sure the thrifty courses are nice, but I would feel cheated if I went to Pinehurst and didn't play...Pinehurst.

Kind of like going to Scotland and playing the hidden little local courses, and not playing the Old Course, or Carnoustie, or Troon, etc. Yeah, you'll play some good golf, but why travel so far if not to play the featured course?
