Thread: I was putting on the beach..so to speak

  1. I was putting on the beach..so to speak

What are they doing to the greens, when its all full of little holes, and covered with sand?

I was dissapointed, because my iron play was pretty solid today, but putting was near impossible on that stuff.:(

Every single course around here has had it done right now. I was literally putting on a beach the other day also. 1st hole looking at the pin it looked like the green was just dead since it was all brown. Hit it on my 2nd shot & it was completely covered in sand. The greenskeepers were spreading it on, letting it sit for awhile & then brushing it off. Impossible to putt on.

I think it's needed to allow the roots to spread out.

Personally, I don't think it's a big deal. Overseeded and uncut? That's a big deal. Aerated and sanded? All in your head.

I know it's necessary, but, the way they aerates the greens here, it's aweful to play on. Just terrible.

    I hear you.
The rest of your game suffers too, because you know that once you get to the green, its all over with.
Too many negative thoughts cant be good.

When the aeration holes are 3/8" in diameter & the ball literally jumps around like a frickin pinball or maybe that Plinko game on "The Price is right" then it's not in anyones head.

You just have to let a little chaos theory into your head. Bounce left, right, left, left, left, right and the ball ends up going straight.

Every Plinko ball ends up at the bottom of it's own cup eventually.

But at least on Plinko there are like 5-6 holes it can drop into. Maybe that's what the courses need to do on aerated greens? Install a few more cups all within inches of each other?

When it's done right, the sand should mostly plug the aeration holes, keeping the bounce to a minimum. The main problem I've had with aerated greens is just getting the speed figured out. They are much slower than normal because of the sand and because they can't mow as close (the sand would damage the mower blades). I don't have any trouble with playing on aerated greens... golf is supposed to be about adjusting to conditions, and aerated greens are just another adjustment, no different than windy or wet conditions. If everything was the same every time I played, it would be quite boring. I like having to make those adjustments in my game.

  15. yeah its usually a pain in the butt.but as mentioned it has to be done.i am actually glad they do it the first few yrs. our course was open they didn`t do that and the greens were not receptive.always had to play it short and let it roll on.

now that they aerate and sand dress them they are getting more receptive to short irons.
