Thread: Why is shaping shots important?

  1. Isn't it too boring to hit every shot straight?

Actually, not really. Hitting every shot pure feels good, but, if you want to go as low as you can go, shaped shots help.

Most of my shots I hit pretty straight...with the exception of my putts which go wherever the hell they want to.

Hitting in half way is entirely mental.Distance control is instinctive, leaving it half way is 100% in your mind, you simply don't trust yourself and can't let go.Best example is throwing some paper into a waste bin,you would never ever in a million years get it so wrong you would leave the paper half way from ten feet away, most would go in ,some would hit the rim and some would miss by a small amount.

You obviously have cutter in your mind, such as technique, and this will increase tension.Shake out the tension and let go

Please, Bore me to tears, sure beats the creative thought that go through my mind as my ball flies off the fairway and into the woods

Interestingly these last few months I spent a deal of time trying to switch from what was a natural draw to a natural fade. Decided I am pretty much locked into my home course the majority of time, and even most of the other courses play similar. With the narrow fairways and how the course plays, the fade is a much more ideal shot. Primarily for the sake of my woods, but with my irons as well. Haven't been able to really even hit a predictable fade when need the last few years. Where we would live and play 4 years ago, the courses were wide open and sideways run and extra distance usually still stayed in play well without adverse circumstances.

The experiment is going well, and although I now hit much more consistent fades than draws in general with my woods, my irons still slightly draw more on the average of the two maybe, but my primary shot now for woods and irons about 75% of the time right now is dead straight. Never expected to be able to achieve that result, but man if I can bottle it for next year I will be a happy camper. Hitting a ton of greens lately. Since starting the experiment my handicap has dropped a 1/2 each time I get my card.

Interestingly in trying to transition between the two intentionally, I can really feel the swing difference and can now seem to work the ball how I want. Before, when going to the draw, it was from when I started and simply ingraining what my initially instructor told me to do. Although I still only try and "work" a particular shot shape when I feel it is necessary to stay out of trouble and not simply because it sets up better for the hole. I am still realistic that with my ability it is more important to have a go to shot shape that I can trust, more than several that are not as trustworthy.

In my case of the last 3 months it is giving up 10-15 yards on my irons, 25 on my woods and keeping the ball in the fairway most of the time.

Kinda compare the straight ball to driving a car. Is it better to pass on the shoulder or the passing lane? If the car in front of me moves out of the way when they see you in the rear view mirror, why risk either, don't ask, just go with the flow? Not something you will see very often, but it is sure nice when you do

  10. Ok..You guys convinced me, that shaping shots, is an important part of this game.
I'm going to learn this, and will report back with my progress.
It may take a while before you hear from me again.:(

Practice is for golfers who have nothing self-important to say. FOOL.

  13. Cool Fools? Did someone just open up with

the word, "Fools"? What about the guy with no legs that would like nothing better than to leave his computer and go practice? What about the guy who has already practiced for two hours and played for four more? What about the people that are light years ahead of most when it comes to golf or anything else? What about the people who do not like being called fools by anyone, even when a person has no earthly idea to whom they may be addressing the term "fool"?

Which is better: Fools FOOLS fools Fools:real angry: Fools

    FOOLS FOOls fools:laugh:

No doubt about it, the term Fools with a face comes off better than just the term Fools alone. Far less sarcastic, egotistical, whatever.

Nope, sorry,I don't do smilies, you missed the thread when we discussed this at length.I genuinely believe the US forum users are far to sensitive to the English sense of humour, you are all a little bit to touchy. As in the above post,a fine example, its obvious surely that it wasn't directed at an individual and equally obvious it was joke.Or most likely you just don't get it,which is fine,we have a different culture after all (although Curb Your Enthusiasm is pure genius).

I just have had enough of constantly explaining the UK sense of humour on US boards and constantly pampering to overly sensitive users as if the boards were some sort of Gettysberg address for world peace.Maybe I should just stick to UK boards where we can be rude to each other and no one gets annoyed because its not taken literally.Half my life on these boards is spent wasting paragraphs being nice just so I can then say 'but your swing speed is only 24,less than my grandmother,so maybe a 905R with a XX V2 is POSSIBLY to much for you? FOOL,buy another club is so much easier.Larry David woud approve I am sure.

Well said - even for a rude, humourless Brit. Please note the nod to the proper British spelling of the word "humour". I wouldn't dream of using the garish and uncultured New World spelling "humor", lest it offend the sensibilities of our other, more culturally sensitive listeners.
