hey guys, long time no post. I got an offer from a college in Missouri for a 70% scholarship and I was wondering if Missouri is a good place to play golf ie what's the weather like, good courses in the area etc. Thanks

What course were you offered? How long? How good is the college?
I think it sounds cool, and being in the South I would imagine all year round golf, although hot in the Summer months I would imagine.

Awesome!! Congrats on the scholarship offer! Can you give us a little more info as to where in the State?? There are many excellent courses, but your access will be dependant upon where you will be going to school. Is the school in the KC area... the St. Louis area... the Columbia area... the Springfield area??? There are some great courses, but narrow it down a bit for us to give any specifics.

Climate can be somewhat dependant on the specific area in Missouri. Most of the state can see play at least 10 months out of the year. If you are in the southern half of the state, you could play all 12 months. The north half will see some snow that will limit your course availabilty in December/January.

Being located in neighboring Kansas, we have some pretty good competitive comments about those who choose to live in Misery!!! I'll not bore you with those, yet!!! Again, congrats and get us a little more specifics on the location.

"...and being in the South..." Not hardly!! Misery lies quite centrally located. The geographical center of the continental U.S. is in Kansas. Misery lies on the same line, north to south, as Kansas. That makes them Central... not South. The weather can vary greatly between the north end... St. Joe... to the south end... Springfield. It can also vary dramatically between, say, Kansas City and St. Lous/Hannibal.

It's called Missouri Baptist University, in the NAIA division located in St.Louis, which I have just found out is in the eastern part of missouri, almost into illinois. it's nothing officail just yet, I was just given basic figures for what sort of deal they'd give me with my handicap (USGA of 1.4)

See if MBU will bring you over for a visit. St. Louis is a BIG city. You won't be in the rural Midwest. You'll be in metro USA!!! The weather in St. Louis can run the complete gammut. Again, you should have no difficulty playing at least 10 months of the year. (You will need to study at least a couple, anyway!!) East St. Louis is in Illinois and has some really "depressed" areas. (Trying to stay politically correct.) You will not want to wander into East St. Louis. The western suburbs, in Missouri, are pretty upscale.

Google st. louis area golf courses. The PGA/LPGA has made stops in St. Louis. I think it's something like Belhaven. The Bluffs is a phenomonal track just southwest of the St. Louis area. You will need a car if you plan to travel to and from courses in the St. Louis area.

If you become more serious, contact the Missouri Golf Association mogolf.org for more information. They should have information on all the courses you will have access to in Misery!!!!

St. Louis is my home town, so I think I can bring some perspective to this.

Bellerive will host next years BMW tournament (what Cog Hill in Chicago did this year, it "replaced" the Western Open).

Actually, unless there is snow on the ground or it remains below freezing all day, most golf courses in St. Louis stay open year round. Some of the private clubs close up shop, but most of the public ones want to keep the revenue coming in. You can't play on frozen greens, there is too large of a chance of damage, but if the day's high is going to be 40, they'll usually let you out. Now, as to if you want to go out in 40 degrees... that's a different story.

weather.com lists the average high as 42 in december and 38 in january. And, every winter, there are always good days and bad days. I played in shorts on new years day a few years back. Conversely, this past winter brought massive ice storms to the area; pretty much everything was closed down for a few days there.

Whoever said that weather in St. Louis runs the entire gamut, was very accurate. There are very hot, humid summer days and very cold, snowly, sleety, winter ones. But, at the same time, the weather is always changing -- it is typically only really nasty hot for 6 to 8 weeks, and typiclaly only really nasty cold for 6 to 8 weeks. Those are, of course, averages, so any specific summer or winter can easily be nasty for 12 or 14 weeks.

It is definately not like the south where year-round is the norm, nor like the north where the season is only going to be 6 or 8 months. There are even some exceptionally good deals to be had if you don't mind playing in the cooler weather. Courses that normally want $50 or 60 for a weekday rate only ask $20 or 25 winter rates.

The St. Louis area has hosted the Ryder Cup, the PGA Championship, the LPGA, and I think the Senior Tour aqs well.

There are PLENTY of great courses in the area.....

I'm from St. Louis, and it is a GREAT city. 100% biased, admittedly.

Did you ever see the movie "Judgement Night", where Emilio Estevez and few buddies get stuck in a "depressed area" and are hunted down by a pack of local scumbags?

East St. Louis makes that place look like Disneyland.

The "regular" St. Louis is just fine. Just don't cross the bridge. Seriously.

Unless of course you want to go to one of the greatest strip clubs on the planet. On the other hand, seeing as how you're looking at a Baptist school...wait, you're looking at a Baptist school - of course you'll be visiting strip clubs...

No junior for this year, the guy said he could only make me an official offer in my senior year, so I got that going for me. I'll keep plugging away till then, try and find a place in a D2 school or someplace in Florida/Texas/Georgia
