Thread: golfing terms question

  1. golfing terms question

Has anyone ever heard of the area around the edge of the green being referred to as the "curtain". Alternatively, do you know of any other reference used in golfing that the word "curtain" would refer to?

    Thanks!

I live in New Jersey, but the term was brought up in more of a general, "universal" type context...as in a list of terms all having to do with golfing, one of which was "curtain". I had never heard of it used in reference to golfing which is my reason for asking. Thanks for all your input.

Yeah, Fringe is what we refer to the couple feet just off the green that separates the rough and the green. Collar is what we refer to the are just off the fringe that is more of a fairway section than it is a fringe. Have heard of apron as well, but never heard "curtain" actually.

Here in Aus we call the tightly mowed area surrounding the green the fringe. The bit right on hte edge of the green where it meets the fringe is called the frog hair. On a slightly different tangent, has anyone else noticed how often you see chips hit the frog hair, resulting in a skidding ball that usually shoots way past the hole. Considering how small the landing area is, it's amazing how often it happens. I do it regularly.
