Finally Figured It Out

It only took 10 years of golfing to finally figure out my biggest problem in golf, well maybe second biggest. I always was a good iron player but a poor driver of the ball and a poor wood player. This hurt me many times on par 5's where my score would be much higher then it should have been.

I was watching the golf channel and they showed Jason Day with his coach, he was holding his head so he didn't move it laterally at all. Then it struck me, maybe I have some lateral movement with my head and I got my dad it do the same drill. I found out that there wasn't much on the backswing but on the follow through my head moved ahead of the ball causing a steep swing and plenty of spin.

My iron game has never been affected because its not too much of a problem to have a steep iron swing but with the Driver and woods I had a big problem hooking the shots over and rolling my wrists, my hands were trying to catch up with my body/head so they fliped over.

I went to the indoor driving range and with a slight adjustment in my stance I was striping everything and I think this may finally allow me to play both draws and cuts. This should also give me a higher ball flight with less backspin which should result in the proper distance with my driver that would match my irons.

Now to cure my putting problems and I honestly think I can contend in the amateur on my second home course.

Trevino always preached it, he said the most common thing he saw in amateurs was getting ahead of the ball.

My instructor wants me to move my head laterally, but only on the backswing. A full turn back with my left shoulder over the ball, weight on the inside of the right foot. Impossible to do (for my arthritic ass anyway) without the head moving off the ball.

BUT

He stresses that the head must not move ahead of the ball through impact. Move the right shoulder down and through, and hit into a firm left side. The head will return to the address position. From there I can swing the club up and over the shoulders, with a full balanced release.

That's the idea, anyway...

I'm so dang sporadic with my golf play...sometimes I'm sure my head moves and sometimes it doesnt......just like everyone else....if I keep my head down, I play good golf........when I dont, it can be ugly.
