outdoors...you need to be able to see your ball flight.

I'll go against the rest of you guys. I voted for indoors but really depends on where you are taking the lessons. I am currently taking some lessons at the Golf Town in London ON, and I feel that it is better for me because you get your swing taped from both behind the ball and beside the ball. Although I agree that seeing the ball fly is important, I also think that it can be a hinderance. If you are consistentely seeing a good ball flight are you really going to want to change what you are doing. When you are inside, I find that I tend to focus a little bit more on what I am being told to do, but I can still tell if I hit it well just by the feel of the club.

I guess that what I am trying to say is that I find that I can change my swing easier by thinking about what I need to do and also by seeing an actual video of what I am doing next to a video of what I should be doing

Depends on the time of year, if it's warm outside then obviously the lessons should be outside as well. If it's cold & snowing then head indoors.

Doesn't matter, I've never hit a good shot during a lesson anyway. I preferred the outdoor lessons only because I was able to grab 2 buckets of balls and get to work immediatley after. The indoor ones had the benefit of video. It helps me to actually see what I'm doing on video and get some explanation.

Indoor, but only with video and a launch monitor.

When I took a lesson or two last winter I found it helped no end to have indoor lessons at the local Golf Galaxy as I wanted to focus on my swing mechanics and hitting into the net meant I didn't get all caught up in how far or straight I was hitting the ball. We worked on my set-up, takeaway and swing, videoed the lesson, all that stuff and then I could go to the outdoor range to practice and see what it was doing.

I think being inside really helped me a lot, as I just concentrated on doing what the teacher told me to do and relied on how the impact felt. If I'd been on a full range I worry that I'd have got so caught up in how far I was hitting the ball it would have been a distraction from what I really needed to work on. As it ended up, the improved swing and contact put 15yds on all my irons and 30yds on my driver!

Outdoor lessons helped me to see the ball flight, plus it was easier to pick a target to line up and swing to. It also has the advantange of being able to move from full shots to the short game area to work on more than just the full swing. I always found that hitting off a mat (indoors) tended to hide some contact issues too. You can get away with hitting it a little fat - but not outdoors on the ground.

At the range I never worry about how far a particular club goes - the range balls at my club suck. What's more important to me is the differential between the clubs, and the action/movement/control with a given club.
