3w help....

I won't beat around the bush, I'm playing well at the moment. 'Cap is falling slowly but surely. I'm confident with pretty much every club in the bag......... except my bloody 3 wood.

This is supposed to be the safe option off the tee, you know, the club people take when they can't risk driver (ahem, Tiger??) but in my case I find it easier to cork the driver down the fairway (how ever many yards it will fly before it plugs) - but there are some times where that simply isn't the option and I should be hitting a 3w - only, I can't at the moment and I have a wonderful 3w in my bag, the TM R7 TP - It's a shame we hate each other!! I used to spank it - now it spanks me back instead! I would love to be able to go back to how I used to strike it, tee / fairway, but for the love of god I can't remember.

Anyway anyone got advice for ball position, club distance from your body, etc etc etc stuff i can try at the range to hopefully get a more consistant strike.

Cheers chaps

This cured my fairway wood ills:

SUPINATE your left wrist. See pages 101 and 102 (picture) of Hogan's Five Lessons.

Feel like you are hitting the ball with the back of your left hand.

I like to have my ball position inline with the left side of my face, take a nice smooth swing, like I'm trying to hit a driver off the deck. If I have problems it usually stems from trying to kill it and getting all disconnected and losing my spine angle.

Who says you have to have a 3W? I used to struggle with my 3W so I ditched for a 4W. I found the shorter shaft and couple extra degrees were all I needed.

As my confidence grew I went back to carrying a 3W but I play it at 42.5".

My point is don't get caught up in thinking you have to carry a 3W and it has to be 43", you have options.

I feel your pain. As I've gotten better with all of my clubs, I'm getting worse with my 3W. It used to be (by far) my best club - back when I sucked with everything else. Now I'm getting halfway decent with everything else and can't hit the 3W to save my life. I'm thinking mine may be an issue of fitment. Or something.

I took it to the range today and made some pretty decent cracks at it by forcing myself to keep the left arm close to my chest, and by making myself swing easy instead of getting over-zealous going for the fence. I'm still very uneasy and inconsistent with it, though.

Are you struggling off the tee, the deck, or both?

Are you possibly teeing the ball up too high and trying to hit the ball on the upswing like your driver?. I find myself overswinging with the three wood off the tee and trying to help the ball into the air. I tee it low and concentrate on maintaining might right knee flex and it usually fixes things for me. Keeps me from straightening up too soon.
