Golf Sims

Hi,
My name is Jim Smith and I am doing a little research for a class and was wondering what you guys thought!

I was wondering how inclined you guys would be to go to play a round of golf on a golf sim. Not just a sim, but go out with the guys and play a round on the simulator that would walk you from hole to hole.

Also, you don't have to think of this as JUST a golf sim, it could also have a bar, and maybe serve some food, have some games on TVs...

I know this is kind of a vague idea here, but if the atmosphere in this sports bar/golf sim were right, do you think you would be willing to go? This obviously could not replace real golfing, but during times when you couldn't get to a course, its raining, night, or its the middle of the winter...

Tell me what you think!

Thanks,
Jim

I'd definately go try it out at least once for $hits and giggles. Might even go back, depending on what it was like.

Places like Wisconsin would love this thing in the winter. Summer you would never see anybody there.

A sim where you walk from hole to hole? Like a treadmill, or having a couple of different sims to make you feel like you're walking from shot to shot? A sim with a bar is great, it works for Dave and Buster's.

IT walks you from hole to hole Clug.

--> YOU DONT WALK! lol

I would definately do it, something at a bar or sports bar kinda thing, would be really fun, play a few holes at intermission of the game whilst havin a few drinks, sounds like a lot of fun to me.

damnit i want to go home, i can drink there in less then a month, i cant drink here for 3 more years.

I voted no. I used to go to Sam Sneads a few times a year in the winter and had a great time. Although last year I picked up a Electricspin Launchpad that I can use in my own home and the drinks are a heck of alot cheaper and you don't feel rushed to get as many holes in as possible. I figure it already paid for itself in a couple rounds, and while I found neither the Sims or the launchpad to be extremely realistic, I found the launchpad to be alot more fun and entertaining for the purpose that it serves. Granted you have to have about a little taller ceiling if you want to swing your driver, but that is not a big issue for me with a cathedral ceiling. I just think the 40-50 a half hour that we paid for the sim was overpriced. If not for the launchpad it would be a definite yes, but I just have more fun in the comfort of my own home with cheap drinks, can stop at the turn to eat lunch, and resume when I please. Again, neither are real realistic to me but both are alot of fun so I would take the cheaper option and the one where I don't have to leave home. Granted you don't have an 8' screen, but with the money I save I can buy a really nice big screen LCD that I can use and that will serve other purposes.

There are two in my little Wisconsin town, both in bars but in seperate rooms. I see alot of "foursomes" playing a round, and you even have to make tee times it's so busy, but you hit off a mat, and doesn't grab me at all. I wouldn't do it, even with the short season here.

The idea of playing some sort of golf and having a bar and RESTROOM 20 feet away is kind of appealing.

Oh. Well, the Clugnut house has drinks, obviously. How would it not walk you from hole to hole? How would you proceed? I wish I had a place indoors to swing on a Launchpad, I would totally get one. Do you like yours, Jayhawk?

As mentioned, it is not the most realistic.

... but 2 feet of snow on the ground, the liquor cabinet is stocked, my clubs are in the garage, and next to typing on ST to use my computer. For $200 on something that will last a few years and allow you to invite your golf buddies over to swing the clubs and down a few. How can you go wrong. Heck, last year we even went so far as to design our own golfers on TW golf like WBL and Sssmokin, and even downloaded a patch to upgrade so that we hit our normal distances with the clubs. It's not the best and not as good as the views on a simulator, but cetainly worth the price that it cost. To be real honest, I always thought the simulators were pretty unrealistic and outside of the screen this is just as good IMO.

Heck, I was sold when my wife said "You know, we really need to get a big screen TV to use with this...."

I think I could make this work in my garage. I have nine foot ceiling and a laptop. They are very cheap on Ebay, and maybe I could find a cheap projector.....

I do it, but just to keep my swing in gear. It's virtually worthless to equate scores on a sim to real life, and you have to check how dialed the thing is on the range beforehand. I've been on two in one night where one says a 7 iron is 185 yards and the other is a more realistic 150. Makes a HUGE difference.

However, as noted, beer makes it a good time no matter what.

Actually even on a laptop it is fun, but if your laptop has an S-video port it is even better hooking it up to any TV. We us it on a 27" TV, but plan on getting a bigger screen soon. Originally we just used the 15.4" screen on the laptop, still fun. The bigger the screen the more fun. It actually will work on a shorter ceiling even if you can swing say a 7i. You just adjust the clubs to a power shot. Even though we have the room, I usually just use the FW I am having the most trouble with on the course just to be able to swing it, a 7i and a GW. You get used to the swing controls and since it is not the most realistic it is all about having a few drinks and swinging the clubs.
