VJ picked up his ball in FW in playoff, whats

up with that? He marked his ball with a tee in the ground and picked up his ball and replaced it.

He had topped his ball out of the bunker. Perhaps it was damaged?

He had skulled his previous shot from the bunker. He was checking the ball for damage, but was not allowed to clean it.

If that had been a balata ball, it would have been damaged for sure and he would have been allowed to replace it.

From the little bit that I saw, it looked like he would have been better off with a belly putter

I'm not sure how much having the belly putter out of every bunker on the back 9 woulda helped...

It looked like he lost interest. OR he saved all of his

crappy shots for the last five holes.
BTW, who decides if it is ok for him to pick up the ball to look for marks?

Like I said, I hardly watched any of it at all. I just saw a hilite package showing a bunch of his missed putts during the final round.

You were right too. His back 9 was junk, except a stellar 199 yard 5 iron from the rough to about 10 inches. That was phat.

He decided i think. If you have reason to believe there may be a cut or some deformation of the ball, you can mark it and check it out, but may not clean it (except to better determine for said cut/deformation etc).

IF there was a cut or something, he is allowed to replace the ball with a new (conforming) one in the exact same spot that the first ball was.

I am pretty sure that he also announced it to his playing partner and roaming rules official before he lifted it. They did not show it on TV, they only showed him inspecting the ball and replacing it.

Cool, any time I blade the ball I can lift it.

Wouldn't this turn your normal 4 hour round into a 6-7 hour round??
