From the time I started, playing at 9 or 10 just hacking around hitting driver into everyhole at a par 3 course, I just could not get enough.

Playing for 10+ years it is always a challenge, always a new goal, always something to prove evey single time I step onto the first tee.

Tournaments are my favourite now, I enjoy playing by the rules counting everyshot, knowing you have to play it as it lies everytime no matter what and deal with it.

Every so often I will play my best, I know its there the whole time thought, just a matter of tapping into that great source inside me.

My initial post was intended to be funny and sarcastic, it most likely failed on both counts.

Why do I play golf? Sometimes I wonder myself? I play because it is hard, not everyone who tries can do it, including myself sometimes. I play for the time it gives me outdoors enjoying natures beauty. I play for the competition, and unfortunately at my age, (48), this about the only sport I can still compete in. And it doesn't even have to be competing against others, because as we all know, you're constantly competing against the course and conditions. I play because it is something me and my 4 sons can do and do together offering those rare opportunities for that elusive feeling of closeness with them that I miss now that they are all grown. I play for the camaraderie it offers with friends and the opportunity to meet and make new and hopefully close ones. I play because it is always new and different, a complex and cruel mistress that can at one moment make you feel on top of the world, and the next make you feel totally and completely humbled. And I play for that rare and elusive feeling we get when we pull off the shot we had envisioned in our mind. That pured long iron shot that soars gracefully through the air in a beautiful arch and lands softly on the green, releases just as we had imagined in our minds eye and rolls to within inches of the pin, or that tee shot that rings out in our ears when we hit it dead on the sweet spot and it screams down the fairway in a perfect rainbow flight to land and roll out, out distancing our fellow players by yards and then hearing their accolades telling us, "dammit man, you nutted that one", or, "Holy $hit, you got every bit of that one". In other words, I play for many reasons, many I've left out and will think of later the next time I'm on the course or perhaps just sitting staring out the window wishing I had time to squeeze in at least 9 holes. I play because I am hopelessly and completely addicted to this game that I know I will never master, but also know I shall never give up on the attempt to do so.

Personally I think jesper parnevik has the best style in golf.
Clearly the reason I play golf is because I'm a masochist. This can be the only explanation. Why else would I ever walk myself up to the tee box wearing a 25lbs bag, that used to have 36 balls in it, but now only has 12, tee up, swing, curse, and begin the hunt. All with a big smile on my face. upon locating this misplaced shot, shooting it towards a real tiny island of nice grass only to learn I have to get it past three freaking beaches, two lakes the size of the english channel and into a hole the size of my fist. It seems crazy doesn't it? I love this game.

1. It's fun
2. Competition
3. It chose us, we didn't choose it....try and quit, you just can't do it - and if you do you will always come back to it at some point.

A friend of mine say's "golf is cheaper than therapy.....and more fun." A far as I'm concerned it the ulitimate recreation because to do it well you can't be thinking of anything but the shot your executing.
