WTF???

I played in 30 mph winds with gusts over 40 today. My putting was absolutely outstanding - I drained 3 20+ foot putts, none for birdie. Rest of my game was very average. I parred 1-3, with no bad shots, no great shots, just average golf. Step up to the fourth tee, and proceed to skull my 3 wood, hook a hybrid OB, and chunk a 4 iron. From there, I put a knockdown wedge on and made the putt for double. I just absolutely forgot what I was doing out there. On the fifth hole, I pured a hybrid, put a 9 iron on the green, and 2 putted for par. My playing partners asked me what the hell happened on the fourth, I honestly don't know what to tell them. Anybody else randomly implode for one hole, then continue to play normally?

I'm guaranteed to have at least 2 blowup holes where I have a double or triple. if I can fix that crap I would be shooting great. but like yourself I can't explain why it just seems to happen every round.

That is usually the accepted norm for what separates a mid-handicap from a low-handicap Although for me it is usually 2-3 blowup holes a round, then a whole bunch of pars and bogies. I rarely get many birdies, but then I only average about 4 greens in a round. If not for the 2-3 blowup holes I would likely be single digit as it is amazing what 2-3 triple, quads, and double pars can do to a score. Many times for me, a blowup hole is usually a matter of a bad tee shot, OB, lost in the woods, hitting 3 off the tee. If I can limit it to just one a round, I am usually happy and have a pretty decent round. Probably the reason I have been willing to give up about 20-25 yards with my driver and 10-15 with the rest of my clubs over the last year. Keeping the ball in play.

If you find a cure for that, please let me know.

Had one like that recently. First tee shot squirted low and left into a marsh. Second (third) smoked a beauty down the right side. Topped my 3w so badly it went nowhere, then hit my 5th with the same club from the same spot and crushed a beautiful fade up the fairway. Hit a pitch on to the green and two putted for an 8. I haven't a clue where those shots came from, but they were the difference between shooting my all-time low score and and tying it with an 88.

Same story for me. Except... I typically try to play to about 15 over par because otherwise I do stupid things. If I could play bogey-golf, I'd be happy. I typically par 4 to 5 holes a round. Birdies are very rare for me. But... if I could bogey the other 13 or 14 holes... I'd be much better off. Instead, I'll have a hole like the 10th last Friday where I'll hit an okay drive... top my 2nd shot... hit my 3rd fat. Put my 4th just short. Hit an ugly, ugly chip over the green... and then 3 putt for a double-par-plus.

Just like you guys... I don't know where these bad shots come from. Late in the rounds, I get lazy. I know my swing gets ugly because I get tired. But - I still usually play the last 3 or 4 holes about 4 over par simply because I slow my swing down, take an extra club or two... and try to keep the ball in play.

I would love to do that the rest of my round, but... it seems that somewhere in the middle... I will lose my tempo and pull ugly shots out of my bag time and time again.

I stay away from big scores, that is usually my strength. Just think..8 bogies would be a horrible round...add in 3 birdies rest pars and you shoot a respectable 77.

I'm jealous. I generally have 14 - 15 good / great holes and 3-4 (usually in a row) where I lose concentration and blow up my score. My problem generally comes from pulling my head too soon to watch my shot, particularly when I've been hitting it well. I think for a lot / most of us it is a head issue.
