I'm playing for 1st time with glasses

Well I finally went for an eye exam and it turns out my vision is not quite what it use to be. I'm going to try playing with glasses today to see if they help, hurt or don't matter. My neighbor and playing partner started wearing his this year and he's dropped from a 14 to a 9 so I figure it's worth a try.

Anyway, it's the first really nice Fall day we've had so no matter what it's going to be great. Just checked outside and it's still in the 70s at 2pm. We haven't had that since March. Rock, bring the Cayenne down and let me drive it. I'll be gentle I promise & I'll let you beat me at golf.

Dude, I remember the first time I put on contacts. It opened up a world of detail that I could never have imagined. I don't know if it will improve your game, but you'll enjoy the experience so much more.

Then burn them.

Then, take the ashes and spread them around during a dust storm.

And never buy contacts again.

Dave, I play with contacts, because the peripheral blur of glasses annoys me in my swing. My friend will take out the contacts and puts on glasses, because they force him to keep his head still and pointed at the ball. Either way, the better eyesight can only help you-- especially reading putts...

It turns out the glasses help. I noticed the biggest difference when reading putts like you said crowe. I guess I keep my head pretty still because I didn't notice any distraction during the swing.

Buddha, I think what I enjoyed most was the detail you mentioned. Our neighborhood is bordered by a lake on 3 sides and so there are some terrific views from the course. It's nice to really see them. It also doesn't suck to see where your ball is going. I can't believe I didn't notice it sooner but I suppose the change in my vision was so gradual that it just seemed normal.

Rock, fair trade. The goldens will wear you out tho. They LOVE to play. No promises on the tread.

Buddha & Crowe, since you both wear contacts I have a question. Do either of you have allergies & if so does it give you problem with the contacts.

Glad to hear you had a good time. The leaves on trees were the most impressive detail to me.

I have seasonal allergies (ie. hay fever) which do not affect my contacts. Occasionally my eyes might get a little dry, but with some Visine and a Claritin, I'm good-to-go again.

How's it going? I am a myopic bespeckled Irish git most of the time, but funnily enough, I only wear my contacts for golf these days. I find glasses hard sometimes esecially in the elements, and where I am from wind and rain are always only one step behind you. I find the wind makes my eyes water up when I play with glasses on.

One things for sure I am so shortsighted I wouldn't be able to hit a ball (even a beachball) without optic help. :thumbup:

Good for you Dave. I only got glasses a few years ago, and it was gradual also. I'm only a -1.25 and -1 on the scrip, so I go without glasses most of the time, except at work with the computer, and contacts on the course. I have no knbown alergies, but do suffer a bit from dry eyes with the contacts, probably from a smoker's film buildup on them. I keep plenty of wetting solution w/ me on the course, and try to wear sunglasses to keep debris out unless lack of sun prevents it.

And yes, seeing the ballflight does help. Sure beats, "Anybody see where that one went?"

Well I am half a blind man myself.

My scrip is -4.5 so I can see only about six inches from my face. 49 Years old.

I wear contacts mostly but have glasses too. When I have my contacts in - I need reading glasses for closein vision.

I wear contacts exclusively for golf and find several advantages.

1) I get 20/15 distance vision with these suckers. The older golfers who play with me depend on me to see their ball all the way to the ground. I can see the ball on ground easily 200 yards away.

2) I can see so well on putts. I play in hot weather and don't worry about sweat on the glasses or them getting dirty.

Carry some eye wash in the event that debris gets in my eyes but that happens maybe once a year...

It sounds like the contacts are the way to go on the course. I did a quick search and found that there are about 5 bazillion different kinds. Great, more complicated than picking a new set of irons.

I saw a couple that made claims about better vision or more comfort. Is there any truth to any of this or are they all pretty equal?

My understanding is they're all pretty equal. Some might be more healthy for your eyes than others, however. I'd talk to your doctor to see what he's pushing, errr, I mean recommending. FWIW, I use Acuvue2 lenses, and they're just fine by me.

I use Bauch and Lomb Softlens 59. These are intended for extended wear and the box says they will last two weeks if you leave them in all the time.

I have been wearing contacts for 19 years - every day. I have never liked the idea of sleeping with them in my eyes although I do it occasionally when I am super tired and frankly lazy. Maybe once or twice a year..

So my daily routine is to take them out before I go to bed. Put em in an inexpensive Multipurpose Solution you can buy at Wal-Mart for $2.50 a bottle. This solution cleans them as well as stores them. The "name brand" multipurpose solutions are $7 a bottle and not a tad better.

In the morning, when I first wake up - I put on glasses to get going, have breakfast, coffee etc. Then put in contacts....

Advantages:

1) My eye doctors love this and say it is much much healthier for your eyes to give em a rest every night.

2) Extended wear lenses are really really cheap. I get these by mail order for about $8 a box (of six).

3) If you take them out every night and put them in the inexpensive storage solution - each lens will last about 2-3 months. I kid you not. A two week lens will last about 10-12 weeks. An $8 box of six last me half a year or so.

Total annual vision cost for this is about $100. I've used these products and methods for 20 years and have had one eye infection and no other issues....

You can see so well with contacts on the golf course....

I like the idea of the extended wear & Walmart solution. I live in a small town and without driving into Austin, Walmart is pretty much THE place to shop.

Speaking of Wal-Mart, their vision center can probably hook you up with an eye exam and everything else. I got my most recent one at Target.
