Wrist Action

I have been playing off and on again for about 4 years; however, over the past couple of months I have really gotten serious about playing.
I just went to see a golf pro because sometimes my accuracy suffers. Before I went to see him I was hitting average shots with a poor one here and there. The pro told me that I was not turning enough, my elbow should be tucked in more and that I must hinge my wrist. About a year or so ago a starter before I was teeing of saw my swing and told me that I am slicing because I was hinging my wrist. Immediatly after I stoped hinging my wrist I was straight as an arrow on most shots. I am so confused. Does anyone have any advice?

It's a question of "when"

Yes, you need to hinge your wrists. That stores up power. I videoed Ian Poulter at The Masters and it's very clear how much hinge he maintains on his downswing (at the top it's 42deg, when his arm is parallel to the ground it's 67 deg, near impact it's still 127deg -- I'm trying to remember the analysis I did).

The issue is when you hinge your wrists. If you hinge your wrists early, you pick up the clubhead and cause a slice. Take a look at the top players and you'll see when they hinge their wrists. The starter was probably pointing out that you were picking up the club.

It will happen naturally, Penick says it best. Mak sure when you are waist high, that the toe of your club is pointing up, if it is then finish the turn and you don't have to worry about it.

If you do it on purpose, you will struggle with accuracy, if it happens on its own you won't. It also called 'wrist set' and some do it early, ala Els, or late, such as Greg Norman, no right or wrong here but its fair to say most need a normal set, Greg Norman is the exception
