I believe the rule is that the needles would have had to be placed there for disposal. If they are part of the natural environment they are not considered loose impediments.

Naw. Remember Tiger's rock? You can't remove a plant if it's still growing, but pine needles, you bet, unless you're in a hazard.

Tiger's Rock

The rule was changed after that incident. I know this much but I do not know what it was changed to.

Can anyone help me out?

You play this hole often? Pin positon is key on this one from the sound of it. If it's back you'd be better off laying back off the slope as much as possible, then hit a full 9 or PW, or even hit a knockdown and skip it back there. If it's up then get it on the slope. Rember that an upslope is adding a lot of loft to the club. I'd personally play it back and deloft a SW from 90 full swing. That would have a ton of spin and hit mid green and come back to the front. Up is the easy pin for me, if it's short I've still got a chance to chip in and lord knows I've got a much better chance at a 10ft. chip than a 10ft. putt.

This reminds me of a situation yesterday. 327yd. par 4 setup as a dogleg right, 4 large trees and then mounds straight at it. (also Mr. Ross). I could see the pin was mid/back left. If I'd hit my normal cut 3W to 90-100 out I'd have a nasty bunker to clear and about 10ft. to the pin. I instead took driver over everything and left it inside of 20yds. with generous bounce. Now the bunkers are out of play, easy uphill pitch shot to the pin. I pitched a SW up below the hole and then missed my 6 footer uphill. lol.

No way to get the clubhead on the ball in this case, except with an exceptionally steep backswing. The pine needles completely blocked the path to the ball.

Then you take a stroke and come out of there!!!

Isn't this the distance everyone hit's their PW and wedge?

That's a very good analysis. It's #18 at Forest Hills so I have played it many times. It's actually a sucker hole right now because:
-it looks drivable, only about 280 yards and change from the blue tees, but it is OB left very close to the fairway.
-it's the last hole and by then people are tired, especially if they walked the course. 16, 17, and the last part of 18 are very uphill. Tired golfers do not make good swings especially of they are swinging out of their shoes.
-the green is guarded by trees and bunkers. Trying to hit the green with a driver is very difficult.
-yet every time I play it, almost everyone hits driver off the tee and either goes OB or into the trees, where they have no chance to make par. I always hit 3wood, but I should probably hit a 4 or 5 iron and land in the small flat area of the fairway.
-I walk, so I never really know where the pins are positioned on holes like this. The pin position sheets are only in the carts. Maybe I should start carrying binoculars so I can see the pins from the teebox.

So my spectacular explosion shot was for naught? What a gyp...

Hell, I probably broke a rule by hitting the pine needle cantaloupe and propelling the ball onto the green.

The way I have been playing lately it would probably be shanked wedge, topped wedge, fat wedge, thinned chip and 3 putt.

Grip down an inch and swing hard at my lob wedge. Thinking it over, if its 90 yards to the pin a smooth SW should keep the spin off of it.

8 or 9 iron depending on lie. Knock it down and run it.

That's the shot as far as I'm concerned. Some sort of long chip shot. Too many people assume that you have to fly the ball all the way back there. You don't. I can hit a 6 iron from 100 yards to 10/12 feet practically all day long if there is an opening in front of the green. Imagination is the key. Of course, you have to have time to practice these types of shots so you know how.
