Wish Me Luck!!

I'm subbing in a league tonight. I think everyone knows about my left eye "issues" so this will be a test. Extremely cloudy in the left eye this morning but at least I'll have some playing partners to watch where my ball goes. And I have an excuse if I suck.

I bet you keep your "eye" on the ball...sorry - couldn't resist.

Good luck, bud!

gl wbl.you will probably play better because you wont be expecting as much.seem s the times i have played with somebody with a recent injury they always play better because they are not trying to crush the ball but just trying to make solid contact.

plus if you know you wont be able to see the ball you might not have the urge to peek.

Truer words have not been spoken. The played 10 days after having my defibrillator battery changed and it was one of the best ball striking days of the year. Still can't put but that is a whole other issue.

Well, here's my day. This course is tree lined and has the reputation of the fastest greens of any course in the state of Wisconsin. And they aren't flat and the pins are in nasty places. Maplecrest CC.

Started off pulling first drive into left side behind a tree on a very long par 4. Dubbed chip. Dubbed second chip. Started out with a NINE!!. I never screw up chipping. Blame the eye!!!

Second hole, an easy 320 yard par 4. Nice drive on right side of fairway. Fairway is slanted right, ball bounces right and behind a tree. Waste a shot to get back in fairway. Iron is short. Misjudged the wind. Chipped on green but not close. Two putt. A SIX on an easy hole!! Blame the fairway!!!

Third hole, a long par 4 with water on the right. Nice drive. Nice second shot right of green. Wedge is on but not close. Two putt bogey.

Fourth hole, a short 125 yard hole with a bunker in front. Misjudge the strength of the wind (so did another partner) and right in front of bunker. Bunker is on the back side of a mound in front of the green. Dub the stupid chip into the bunker. Grab the SM Vokey. Pin is right on the front of the green close to the mound. Perfect sand shot on the downhill slop of the mound (played it like that to slow it down) and rolls into hole for par. Hmmmmmmmm.

Fifth hole, 613 yard par 5. Perfect drive, perfect 3-wood, short of green with iron. Chip on but not close and two putt for bogey.

Sixth hole, dogleg par 4. Tee it too high and hit high and only 200 yards but in fairway. Next 3-wood nice. Iron on green with uphill putt. Too careful on putt and short. Make second for bogey.

Seventh hole long par 3. Put shot on green but bounces into bunker. Get out but short of green. Chip on and leave myself long putt. Two putt for five.

Eighth hole long par 4. Pull drive left behind tree. (Don't know why I'm pulling my drives so much today). Dub shot. Dub shot. Dub shot (geesh, I think this is where my eye is screwing me up). Hit nice iron that looks right on pin but short. Chip up to pin for tap in and seven. Yikes.

Ninth hole. Long par 4. Perfect drive in center of fairway. Thin my iron but near green. Wedge on but leave 10' putt. Two putt for bogey.

A fricken 51. Worst round of the year and the first hole (9) was my worst hole of the year. But the weird thing was only two guys in the league broke 50 and just barely (49). This is a tough course where they play alot of the state tourneys on. Not a classy place but not expensive and I'll play here again many times this year.

That's it. I blame my eye.

.

Everything aside, do you see a recurring theme? Short. Short. Short again.

Please, at least for a little while, PLEASE take enough club to get to the BACK of the green. 90% of the time course designers don't put bunkers back there. They put them SHORT and left and right.

Next time you play I'd like to read, "Iron into the green, misjudged wind, had a twelve footer." "Iron into the green, a little fat, had a 20 footer." etc.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Well, when you get old and senile you also get stubborn and the ego takes over.... (I can hit this club on...etc etc). And (in my defense ) the wind was a little stronger then it seemed. AND these greens are lightning fast. If you land on the back you're going off the back. What's the difference if you're chipping from the back or front? The back is usually chipping downhill. the front is chipping uphill. I'll take uphill on fast greens.

Send me your PINGS. I'll file off all the numbers, and paint one club more on them. I'll turn your 5-iron into a "6-iron" (as far as you and your cyclops eye can tell.) Then you can keep hitting the "wrong" club, and it will be the "right" club! Except that it will still be a PING...

Great advice here, and advice I only recently started taking myself. I mean, you know, but do you really know? Now, my most important measurement is not to the pin (unless I have a wedge); its to the back of the green. I take enough for the back of the green, and take a smoother swing. Mishits are on the front, and those once in a while rockets are on the back or slightly long. Most, though, end up in the middle, where the flag usually is anyway.

Appreciate all the suggestions BUT....

Worst score before this was a 48. i've been shooting between 38-44 most of the time. I've been playing the best I have in years.

I'm 61 years old.

I've played a long time and know how far I hit my irons.

I usually pick a club to go for the middle of the green or when in doubt back of the green.

I misjudged the strength of the wind.

You DON'T want to go off the back of these fast greens as most angle down and if over the green you'd be chipping downhill on lightning fast greens.

I dubbed chip after chip until I closed my left eye on the eigth hole and chipped to within 1 foot. Took me the whole round to figure this out.

I had some really bad bounces on good shots.

Other then two blowup holes I played bogey golf (and landed most irons on the green - 2, 3, 6, and 9)..

I pulled a couple drives (not hook) from not following through. I can fix that. Most drives were right down the center and reasonably long for 50º F weather.

Bottom line... I BLAME "THE EYE"!!

You know what's funny... is that I've been playing this 'game' for 15 years (with a little lapse of about 5 years somewhere in there) and nobody has EVER suggested to me that I play to the back of the green.

I end up short often... and with the exception of a few holes on a couple courses I play... there really is no trouble beyond greens.

My GIR % would probably increase greatly if I played to the back of a green rather than to the pin or center of a green.

I love this site. My handicap (see signature) is indicative of my ability... but just some of the mental thoughts that I pick up from reading posts here have helped me greatly in my last 2 or 3 rounds.

I love reading round recaps and I wish there were more posted here... but, it's really a testament to the people who post here that anybody can pick up a new swing thought or tip from posts such as these.

Thanks guys!
