Finally......

The GF finally hit a golf ball into the air last evening.

Actually several balls, out of the 30 or so she hit. They actually flew into the air, instead of killing worms! Her comment: "Wow!"

It's only been a year since I foolishly started trying to teach her how to hit a golf ball.

In that year, she has made it to the range approximately 12 times. Sometimes it's too cold. Or too hot. Or the bugs are biting. Or it might rain. Or it's girls night out (I'm not even asking).

But last evening she finally hit a few balls decent, with her PW, her 8 iron, and her 6 iron. I was going to go crazy and have her hit a few with her 7 wood, but fortunately I came to my senses in time.

What seemed to help most of all, even more than me beating her senseless with a 5 iron, was the Tour Tempo timer. Before trying that, she was making a spastic, unrythmic chop at the ball, despite all of my coaching. After a few minutes of wearing the Tour Tempo timer, her swing had progressed from making grown men cry to merely making them ask for another beer or 6.

Next month: The Driver.

I was thinking the same thing, and thinking about my first instructors comments.

If you try and give advice, she can always find a new instructor, which can be a heck of alot more costly if she is married to the current one. If it had taken my instructor a year, or 12 lessons before I was finally able to get the ball in the air, I would have found excuses not to go as well. Either that, or I would have wrapped my 5i around his neck.

I tried this once...

...and I picked up all sorts of bad habits. I have way too much to worry about with my own swing to look at a brutal swing over and over again.

Sometimes when I'm playing with someone who has a terrible swing, I can't even watch them hit.

I could never be a golf teacher.

That's right. Blame the instructor. Even Butch Harmon and David Leadbetter can't help everyone.

What a bunch of posers.

I couldn't agree more. And it's much easier to ho a new club when your wife doesn't know the difference between a sand wedge and a driver.

You guys think you have all the answers, but we see you there on the weekend.

Probably because when my wife and I get done with a round of golf, we go have a few beers, eat some ribs and wings, and watch a hockey or football game on the tube.

You would likely know what you were missing if you didn't have to leave your friends in the bar to go home and do yard work so you can get done in time to go watch Steel Magnolias, Bridget Jones Diary or God knows what kind of chick flick that sends you both home in tears. While we stay and help close down the bar.

Go ahead, keep thinking you got it lucky

edit 1 - By the way, just to dispell the rumor, it is much easier to ho a new club when the other realizes the value to a good driver or SW, and knows sometimes a club just sucks, because it sucks and a similar club with a different name is better just because it is not the one that does "just suck". Much easier to convince the other half you need a new club when they have to spend 5 minutes going to look for a ball in the woods. Knowing that 5 minutes could be better spent drinking another beer or putting a dent in that pile of ribs.

100% correct.

Something else I've noticed. When my wife and I play 18 together, then work around the house, go out to eat, and come home she's normally of the mindset "It's so nice to have a husband who'll spend a whole day with me." Makes my nights much better than the attitude of "You spent the day out playing golf/drinking with the boys while I was home working in the yard/doing laundry/whatever."

Think about it, boys....

I've been trying to get my wife to play for the last 4 or 5 years. She goes to the range with me once in awhile, but... she always says she doesn't have the patience for the game. She gets mad watching Tiger miss a 20 footer by centimeters.

And... yes, my reasoning is the same. I hate the guilt of playing 18 over 5 hours... and then coming home to listen to her say she had to do the laundry, cook, wash the floors or whatever. I feel like I'm not contributing, even if I know it's not the truth.

In any event. I envy those of you who have your ladies out on the course with you. I've got another 4 to 5 years before the local courses will allow my son out there with me. 'Til then, we spend time at the range and on par 3 courses together.
