Watching the CH-III video this morning, and remembering some Hogan chat (maximize the shoulder turn while minimizing the hip turn), I tried something at the range this lunchtime and am quite excited by the results.
Here’s a few swing thoughts:
- A slight tilt in my upper body to my right to ensure I stay behind the ball.
- Long SLOW (almost slow motion) smooth one piece take-away. Left arm straight and as one with the club until hip height before starting to break the wrists
- Keeping the hips as static as possible for as long as possible, concentrating on shoulder turn instead, going back AS FAR AS POSSIBLE until it started to hurt! Really feeling the muscles tightening in my left shoulder blade!!
- Left shoulder turning down (almost dipping to the ball) instead of around
I felt so loaded at the top, like a spring and the rest was easy, just dropping the hands and turning back and through.
The results were shocking. Into a strong head wind, I was cracking out one after the other 2 irons either straight or with about 5 yards of draw (my preference) to the 200 yard mark. Even my mishits were straightish.
I also hit a lot of good six irons too, interesting hitting it higher than normal, not great into the breeze, but for the most part holding their line.
I took another driver with me today (An old skool 975J) just for fun. I wasn't as consistent with it as I was with the 2 iron, but still I really felt solid behind the ball.
I’m onto something here!! I can’t wait to get out on the course. Thanks CP, must get some video footage.
Oh and a quick footnote. I have been decelerating on my longer putts, leaving a lot short of the cup. I decided to shorten my backswing on my putting stroke to 50% of what it was and am pleasantly surprised to find most of my putts getting up to and beyond the hole now. A shorter BS is forcing me to accelerate through the ball.
