Nanotubes and asbestos

I was listening to Science Friday with Ira Flato (sp??) on PBS radio. His guest was reporting that carbon nanotubes---yes the same stuff used to make graphite golf shafts---is generating the same cellular changes that asbestos generates.

Mesothelioma cancer is primarily implicated with asbestos exposure. The gentleman is researching nanotube exposure in vitro and the cells are exhibiting the same changes.

Some points he made

1. Since the development of Mesothelioma cancer is delayed for 10-20 years after the asbestos exposure the nanotube exposure danger still will not be enumerated for several more years.

2. The in vitro cell changes does indicated further research is warranted.

3. He specifically commented when working with sports equipment such as tennis rackets or golf shafts one should err to the cautious side when generating airborne particles. A mask is the first thing that comes to mind. The level of the loading dose is not known yet nor the effect of nanotubes mixed with "what" is also up in the air.

5. The physical properties of the nanotube carbon and asbestos fibers are close enough to have generated his hypothesis of their similar effects on organic systems.

To quote Hill Street Blues briefing room scene---"Be careful out there"

Man, If the EPA-OSHA-or whoever takes nanotubes shafts away from me I will just have to start. Back to Hickory I guess. Bobby Jones here we are again.

Interesting. But I can't imagine how airborne these things could get. And I don't have a nano shaft anymore that I know of.

Hey, we GREW UP in the asbestos "era" zaphod!!!

The primary exposure would not be the golfer but the builder when cutting a shaft to length unless of course you plan on licking your shaft.. THAT sounds crude and almost improbable.

Is there ANYTHING that doesn't kill you out there?

I'm giving up on believing that shit. It's all a huge media scare. And, even if it isn't, who knows if it's legit or not?

There's a sea of bullshit out there, and we're all floating on a raft in the middle of it.

Thank you, good sir. I totally agree. Everything has a risk of causing cancer, lately. Cell phones, microwaves, golf shafts, gold fish... Geez.

My favorite is the scare that male sperm can cause cervical cancer in women.

Bacon, sex and now golf - what else are they going to take away.

I don't think it causes cancer, but almost worse, apparently it causes you sit around with a bunch of your buddies and a guitar and start singing about it!

After years of careful study and research, I have concluded that being born is the leading cause of death.

Most asinine commercial I have seen in a long long time.

I too have given up on caring what certain groups claim is hazardous, as if anyone is going to live forever. Going to eat what I want, have fun when I want & not worry about any of this BS.
