The check and release

Lee Trevino was famous for this low shot he played into greens that would take a hop or two, check hard and then softly release. Anyone have a clue as to how you hit that shot??
Thanks,
DanT

I play it with a wedge in the back of my stance and take a low wide swing to a low wide finish, that usually keeps it down with a little draw that checks.

Yup, this is the shot I have been playing all year from < 100. Great shot to have as you can control the distance very well.

Call me crazy, but I don't like to hit full shots this way, just 3/4 strong and weak SW shots.

I play it back in the stance also and just try to pinch it good. Also the ball you play makes a big difference, I don't think its possible to get a topflight xl to check up.

Lean on the front foot, set the hands a little ahead and try and pinch the ball between the club and the turf. Not a nice shot to 'need to play' under pressure IMO

It's simply a normal high spinning shot (you need good contact, a descending blow, and a high spin ball) but hit with a much lower trajectory.

The ball cannot hit and suck back like it normally would, due to the lower trajectory. It hits, takes a low hop, THEN grabs the green, and trickles a bit. It is a beauty of a shot.

I know I'm oversimplifying it, and the tips about ball position, club path etc are all good so far.

PRACTICE it, on a real green, with real balls. You will scuff them, so use old Pro V1. It's a shot you can blade easily, but once you have the hang of it, it's not that difficult.
