I won second round! Play again on Wednesday. The thing that sucks, is that if I win that, the championship match is on Saturday, and we're leaving for vacation on Friday

Oh man, that sucks! Since you will, of course, win the semi.

Oh man can you change your plans? I think you should withdraw now, if you win and make it to the finals and don't play that is real crappy.

Fantastic! Is this a straight up tourney, or do you get strokes based on handicap?

I love playing tourneys, but I have never played a match play event. They don't have many around here, because they go on for so darn long. But they sound like fun!

8-1. Advice
During a
stipulated round, a player must not:
(a) give
advice to anyone in the competition playing on the

course
other than his partner, or
(b) ask for
advice from anyone other than his partner or
either of their
caddies.
Penalty for Breach of Rule :
Match play — Loss of hole; Stroke play — Two strokes.

That's what I thought too - asking about club selection is "advice"; but seeing the club is not.

EDIT: Here are the relevant decisions available online:

Quote:
8-1/6 Asking Opponent or Fellow-Competitor What Club He Used at Previous Hole
Q. During play of the 6th hole, A asked B what club he (B) had used on the 4th hole, which is a par-3 of a similar length. Was A in breach of Rule 8-1?
A. No. (Revised)

8-1/7 After Player Has Played to Green He Asks Opponent or Fellow-Competitor What Club He Used in Playing to Green

Q. A plays his second shot which lands on the green. B does likewise. A then asks B what club he used for his second shot. Was A in breach of Rule 8-1?
A. No.

8-1/8 Comment About Club Selection After Stroke

Q. After playing a stroke, a player says: “I should have used a 5-iron.” Was the player in breach of Rule 8-1?
A. If the statement was made casually, there was no breach. If the statement was made to another player who had a shot to play from about the same position, there was a breach.

8-1/9 Misleading Statement About Club Selection

Q. A made a statement regarding his club selection which was purposely misleading and was obviously intended to be overheard by B, who had a similar shot. What is the ruling?
A.A was in breach of Rule 8-1 and lost the hole in match play or incurred a two-stroke penalty in stroke play.

8-1/10 Looking into Another Player’s Bag to Determine Club Used

Q. A looks into B’s bag to determine which club B used for his last stroke. Is this the equivalent of asking for advice?
A. No. Information obtained by observation is not advice. But see also Decision 8-1/11.

8-1/11 Removing Towel Covering Another Player’s Clubs to Determine Club Used

Q.Decision 8-1/10 states that it is not a breach of Rule 8-1 for A to look into B’s golf bag to determine which club B used for his last stroke. Suppose a towel was covering B’s clubs and A removed the towel in order to determine which club B had used, would that be a breach of Rule 8-1?
A. Yes. A player is prohibited from obtaining such information through a physical act.

8-1/12 Double Caddie Informs One Employer About Club Used by Other

Q. When one caddie is employed by two players, A and B, who are not partners, is it permissible for A, who is about to play, to ask the caddie which club B used for a stroke from a nearby position?
A. Yes. A is entitled to seek from the caddie any information the caddie might possess.
I read these as holding that asking about club selection after the information is no longer relevant (i.e. the player asking for club selection information has already hit his shot or finished the hole) is not "advice" subject to penalty, but asking (or giving) information about club selection before the player has hit his or her shot is against the rules.

Yeah I've been thinking about that. I'm going to talk to the organizer to see if something could be worked out to play the championship round at another time, if it suits the other person. I know the guy I'm playing against in the semi and he's a good dude... gonna talk to him about it as well and see what he thinks. But no I can't really change my vacation plans... well I guess I COULD... but then I'd be asking my family to sacrifice and I play enough golf as it is... so they're for sure gonna come first.

It's straight up. They break it up into flights according to handicap though. So no, there's no chance of me playing a scratch golfer. 0-5, 6-10, 11-up.

That is a tough spot you're in. Hope it works out.

Thanks for the extra effort. That clears it up nicely for me.

So I can "mislabel" my clubs without penalty, but if an opponent asks what I hit, I have to tell him the truth, but only if the question won't affect his shot on the same hole.

I knew SV was smart about these things; that's why his intial post confused me. I see now that he was right. Just not real clear.
