Do you fellows tee up irons?

On short par 3's, say 140-190, or close to that, most of you probably use irons off the tee box. My question is, do you put the ball on the tee, or just hit it flat off the ground?

I always use a tee. I usually find one that is broken, as I don't "tee it up" so to speak.

I just push it all the way in so the top of the tee is level with the grass.

As Sling said, ALWAYS improve your lie when the rules allow it.

Yeah, especially if you're talking those distances .... 8 iron to PW maybe off the turf. If you're playing directly into a headwind and ya wanna little punch shot you might consider either a very low tee or off the grass ... jst have a quick peek to make sure the green staff aren't lurking tho

I always tee it up. It's as good as a lie can get and the rules allow it, so why not? I know some guys who don't tee it up on par threes but I think they're cheating themselves.

I guess if I came across a 110 yard par three, I wouldn't tee it up because I have perfected* a 110 yard low chip shot with my pitching wedge that can stop on a dime. But that's about it.

*This denotes that my 110 yard, low chip shot will now fail me for the rest of my life because I used the word "perfected". That shot is now doomed.

Heed these words of wisdom, SUX.

Mr Ireland here is so named because he owns Ireland. He won it in a hole in one competition at Portstewart.

Never bought a drink, though...

off and on, for your longer distances i'll usually tee it up, but GW-7 iron most of the time i'll play off the grass, that may change soon though, having some troubles with those clubs

I've been using tees, I just find that it's a little uncomfortable. I find that I can really feel when I strike the ball, and it's not a good feeling. Off the grass, I usually hear it and don't feel it. Off of a tee, it seems like I get a jolt up the club and into my arms. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I actually did tee a 110 the other day with my PW. Fancy that. Par I think, because it rolled off the green. I've learned my lesson though. Next time I'm teeing off with my putter.

My guess is that you are teeing it up too high and you are hitting the ball on the top of the club face. That would account for the feeling.

The top of the clubface eh? That would indeed be possible, considering I try to keep my iron swings very low. I'll tee it lower next time, just a few mm's above the ground to hold the ball up. Thanks a bunch!

Me too. With my more lofted irons I just tee it very very low. If I'm teeing off with say a 3 iron, I will tee that considerable higher. That's a shot I practice on the range though.

I tee up with everything except my wedges. I feel i get it too much up on the face when I tee it up. I spin it enough, I don't need to tee it up.

If you are hitting wedges on par threes you need to back off the ladies tees LOL.

If the pros tee up every shot, as good as they are, why should I believe I can do better off the turf?
Using a tee is as close to cheating as the rules allow, take what they give you.

You bet! Was the story about Sam Snead and teeing up irons in Davis Love's book? I'll check that out tomorrow...
