Golf Superstitions

Im pretty sure I posted one of these awhile back, but came across one on wrx and thought we should put up a new one. They're always interesting to read.

Mine are:

- No #3 balls
- Mark ball with a 1959 Canadian Nickel
- Never use painted tees
- Clubs in the proper spots
- Always have 1tee, my divot tool and ballmarker in left pocket, right empty
- Preshot routine, always spin the club stepping upto the ball (ive had to backoff becuz i thought if i had spun the club or not)
- Never take the ball out of the hole with my right hand
- Only ever mark 1 extra ball in my bag, all the rest are brand new unmarked, bad karma if im marking more balls "just in case".
- Mark my ball with a Canadian flag over the number left of the <--ProV1x--> and put a black line over the prov logo.

- Ball number correspond to day number (odd and even)
- 3 1/4" tees for drivers, thats it.
- Clubs in proper spots
- Club cover stays on my bag
- I spin the club as well, kind of funny
- Right pocket: Two tees, divot tool, two balls
- Left pocket: Scorecard and pencil
- Mark my ball with two dots below and right of the name of the ball (Tour iX) and up and left.
- Always mark all my balls that I'll use in a tournament, and carry only those
- When I tee up the ball I want the name of the ball to the right, and the logo straight at me

That's all I can think of...for now.

-Mark all my balls with 2 orange dots on opposite sides of the number.
-Put my glove on as I pull up to the 1st tee.
-!st hole I tee off with my 3 wood unless it's a short par 3
-Right pocket, 2 balls, Pivot tool.
-Left pocket empty.
-2 tees, 3 1/2 long, stuck up under the band of my hat.
-Name of the ball facing me when i tee off.
-All clubs in the proper slots in the Datrek bag.
-Lay the head cover on top of the bag when I tee off, replace it after each shot.
-When I pull up to the green I pull my Scotty out of the putter tube, if I'm on the green I take to cover off on the left side of the cart, walk around to the right side and lay the cover on the seat of the cart. If I have to chip on I take it with me to lay beside my wedge so i won't forget either of them.
-When I put I want the line on top, not for alignement reasons but as a focal point.
-On holes where I'm tee'ing off with anything other than my Driver I find a broken, colorful tee to use.

Gawd, I'm more supertitious than I thought,

Is this superstition, or just being OCD?
  • Left pocket--two balls, two short tees, two long tees. I hate to go back to my bag for any reason.
  • The divot tool tends to float between the front and rear left pocket--many shorts seem not to have a back left pocket.
  • Practice swing standing behind the tee, looking at my target.
  • Text on the ball lined up to the target, and the arrow on the club lined up behind it. They're there for a reason.
  • As part of my set-up, I always look up and then back down. My pro teases me about seeking heavenly guidance on the swing, but it keeps my eyes up and my chin down. Like Sandpiper3, I'll step back and restart the routine if I don't do this.

Here's mine:

- Left pocket: Divot tool, coin for marking must never be valid currency (use a quarter or Hungarian coin), couple long tee's
- Right pocket: Pencil, Groove cleaner
- Never use a long tee for an iron tee shot, hybrid or 3 wood, will always hunt on the tee for a broken one
- Clubs must always be in the correct spots in the bag
- Ball is marked with a red and blue spot either side of the number and either side of the ProV1 line (red and blue for my GAA club colours)
- Off the tee or on the green, will line the ball up so all I can see is white ball cover, but will line up the dimples on the line I want to start it (Crazy, I know)
- Never use a headcover for my putter
- Glove in my right back pocket, always taken off directly after hitting my shot

Oh good, the people in the white coats have come right on time....

Absolutely none. I've never been one for superstitions. Golf takes a lot of concentration as it is, why spend my time worrying that there is exactly 2 quarters in my left pocket.

Superstitions or OCD here are mine

I only use my golf balls. Same brand and make for the round. Never ones I have found. They got lost for a reason the first time and have bad written all over them.

Front right pocket hardware. Four tees. Two talls, two smalls. Two nickels for ball marking. Divot tool.

Back right pocket. Glove when not in use and small towel for club or ball cleaning.

I never use ball washers.

I never use anyone else's leftover tees on the tee box. Mine only.

Clubs have their own slots in the Sun Mountain G3 bag though each share a slot with at least one other. I try and keep my 8 iron with the 9 and PW together but sometimes the 8 ends up with the 6 and 7. That party gets broken up when I see it.

Everything is cleaned after the round.

Well, I have a thing. I usually leave it in the car, but the first time I won it was in my bag and off. Yeah, I'm that superstitious.

Funny enough, after a round all those superstitions I really don't care about. Only before.

Never, ever say the "S" word out loud.

Play ready golf except on the green. Putting out of turn always results in a miss.

Left pocket is for one short tee and one long tee and one ball. Two balls in the pocket is negative thinking.

Left pocket if for my glove when I'm putting.

I think that's it.

Yeah the parents were there in Budapest, and the brother was in Long Island, I just like those coins because they are very flat, but still easy to see from behind the ball. Good talking point too!

I put a line on the ball for putting and keep my clubs in order, and that is about it. I do get upset about etiquette though like hitting out of turn on the box but i dont care in the fairway or putting.

I don't think i've been playing long enough to have superstitions, but you've all given me some good ideas!

I do like to start a round with a new ball, don't have too just like too.
