big bertha

Hi there guys - on a different note...

My driver is a big bertha that i guess is about 3 years old, i bought it as it seemed like a driver that i could give a real 'tonk' and get good distance on, when i got to the course i realised that i was a small driver compared to friends huuuge headed drivers and really didn't go that far. Is this still a current club or could i spend 100 dollars/pounds and get something more user friendly and powerfull ?

100 dollars? Hmm.

You might be able to find a cheap BiG Bertha 454 out there with a stock shaft in it. That thing is long and straight. You can't go wrong with that.

I'd also recommend the Launcher 460, but if you're budgeting, i'd look a little more than a 100 bucks for something decent and in the oversize category.

The size of the clubhead doesn't matter one wit. Trust me on this one. I won't go into details because I'm still considering whether to reshaft my new R7 Quad, or maybe have the shaft cut down, or simply trading the thing in for something else.

My "old" driver is about 3 years old, like yours. It's a Callaway Steelhead III that has a pretty small head when compared to the gigantic 400+ cc monsters out today. But I can hit the thing 275 pretty consistently and more importantly, I can hit it straight more often than not.

Ask one of your buddies if you can borrow one of their drivers and take it to the range and see if you like it. If they won't loan one to you, then go to a range and demo one you may have your eye on.

At any rate, bigger isn't always better.

Bigger may not ALWAYS be better, but there's a reason all your friends have those larger clubs. Hit a few different ones on the range and I bet you'll find something better than your old driver.

Agreed.

There is something to be said for a larger sweet spot. If you're swinging well, you can crush a persimmon driver if you hit it on the screws. But, the fact is that not everyone can hit it on the screws "more often than not".

I used a Big Bertha Warbird for years. Loved it. I maintain that Callaway came out with a Warbird with VFT in the face, i'd be the first guy in line to buy one. But, I can't complain about my GBBII 380cc, as when I get lazy, it helps out a ton.

I'm not a huge fan of the big heads, but they make inconsistent golfers better by being much more forgiving.

Distance isn't associated with the size of the club head. Bigger club heads only provide bigger sweet spot for greater forgiveness.

You can find some of the older Callaway or Taylor Made models on eBay for under $100 easily.

Or you can find a brand new Mizuno MP-001 460cc (the USGA limit on clubhead size) with a Grafalloy Blue shaft for $150 just about everywhere. I've seen them for that price on www.rockbottomgolf.com and a local Golfsmith.
