Played with a guy today....

Ok, so me and my girlfriend went out for a round last night at 6:52. Sometimes we go out at this time, because the weather is cooler, and the course is bare.
Yesterday there was a slow elderly team playing Best ball and slowing everyone up, so we jumped up with a single.

So my story...
This guy said he played to a 13, and I beat him by a few strokes, so its not like he was that good. But he said he just got 2 Spin Milled Vokeys in 56 and 60. When we were waiting he would drop a ball about 100 out and hit it. Without fail, everyone of his shots would stop deal, and roll back as much as 15 feet at times. One time he rolled it UP a small hill on the green and down the front of it.

I commented on how that was cool, and he said it was all the wedges. I didn't know that the difference was so drastic between wedges. I play a cheap 40 dollar wedge and have NEVER had anything CLOSE to what he was doing.

So my long story short:
Can a simple switch of wedges give the results mentioned? Or do the clubs just fit his swing?

PS he was hardly digging at all, making pure shots.

King Par is an unknown quantity at this point
It's spin milled, so it's designed to increase spin.

PS. Backspin isn't cool. Pro's fight it because it's inconsistent and hard to master. Usually you want to be able to land your shot and have it stop within at least 5 feet of where it lands. So while it looks really cool, it may do more harm than good.

Those spin milled Vokey's REALLY grab the ball. Generally if I hit mine pure there's little white chunks of the ball where the club has scuffed the cover.

Certain wedges can spin the ball more than others, but a steep descending blow to the ball is waht puts the most spin on the ball to make it spin back.

I have a naturally steep swing and have backed up 7i and most 5i that hit the green dont end up more than a foot away from the ball mark and my irons are over 8 years old...i have had to work on creating less spin as it is hard to judge where the ball is going to stop when it spins back like that.

A nice wedge like a Vokey spin milled, Cleveland Zip Groove, or Taylor Made Rac Tp and a premium ball like a ProV or Bstone B330. You also need that angle of attack.

yeah, at first I thought it was cool, but I guess that would take some big time getting used to. Especially if you are on a narrow green and you can't fight a 5ft backspin, your 30 foot wide green basically just became 20ft.

As mentioned before too much spin gives one distance control problems in the air and on the ground. Spin milled will give you more spin IF you strike the ball with a descending blow and allow the ball to maximized contact with the club face grooves.

Most golfer who do not achieve spin either add loft to the club (scoop) OR hit with "dead" hands. Either way the best LEGAL wedge will not help. Played with a guy who had skateboard tape on the wedge face. That ball danced on the green. Illegal but thought it was neat.

My 56* is my highest spinning club because of the Y-Cutter(spin milled) grooves in the club. Honestly, its a good thing...and a bad thing.

On a par 5 I had an uphill approach with a tier maybe 10 feet past the ball. I landed a solid shot on the tier and spun it back to the pin, tap in birdie. Yay!

On a par 4 I had a front pin that I really only could hit the sand wedge into and ended up spinning it off the front.

HOWEVER, I found my solution. Not much spin? I go with a sweeping shot. Want a lot? Gouge it.

I hate it when I start spinning the ball back. I am playing my best golf when my wedges take one hop forward and then stop dead. I judge distances best that way.

That's simiar to what happened when I got a Vokey SM wedge. Although not 15 feet! They are amazing.

I have some of that grip tape, use it on the deck of my boat. Read this & thought...hmm why not try it? Sure it's illegal for competition but then I don't play in any tournaments & it will be cool to see what happens. Already went out & mounted 2 strips to the face of my 53º, will use it sunday & report back on my illegal activities.

dude i fight putting too much spin on the ball but I play spin milled wedges because they feel the best to me. Mine is over a year old and the groves are not deep at all now since i bet that thing has hit 10000 balls
