Call me Sergio!

So my last three medal rounds have been a bit mixed. I know I am hitting the ball well and giving myself lots of opportunities. Am I being too much like Sergio (and no I don’t spit in the cups!!!). If I could putt like Padraig I would be shooting some low scores right now.

70 (+2) - -1 with 5 to play. Hit every green coming back and had three 3 jacks, including 17 and 18. I almost pitched in the hole at 17 and ran to the back of the green to 20ft. I was being aggressive on each one and missed the come backs. At worst I should have finished -1 as I hit the ball as well as Sergio. With decent putting it could have been a low round.

76 (+4) – I was +7 after 7 and played the last 11 in -3 including birdies on 16 and 18! I guess I was so out of it at the start that I just relaxed and things started happening after that.

75 (+3) – I was +2 on 18th tee and three jacked the 18th from nowhere. I actually felt myself tense up on a 3 foot putt which I duely missed left.

So there are three rounds with similar scores. Two of which I would consider that I choked like a Sergio and the middle round I came on strong at the end.

I don't want to get too downbeat here. Happy just to be playing right now, but it does play on my mind a bit I have to confess. Any advice here?

You and I are playing some similar golf. I shot a 73 (+3) the other day and missed all 4 of my putts that were 3-5 feet for par, and two or three 4-7 foot birdie putts. In essence I made nothing from the clutch distance. I was playing with a buddy of mine and he found himself in the same rut. He is a better clutch putter than me and he said he hasn't made a birdie putt in 4 rounds. For me it is a little bit of the three jack with a smidge of the can't make a birdie. I'm going to dedicate this week to the 4-15 foot putt. Hope you get it worked out.

I have tried that grip...and it works really well for me for anything less than ~10ft but lag putting really suffers(i guess i just cannot judge distance with that grip) and i cant bring myself to commit to two different putting grips on the same green...makes me qeustion myself too much.

I certainly didn't see anything wrong with yer putting, in actual fact it was a better than average part of yer game when we played. Maybe yer gonna have to face up to the reality IG that yer not gonna be a great putter under pressure. I think you have to find a mental thought that can remove the pressure from your putting game. How about in this months medal (it has to be a biggish competition), that you take the mindset, that you don't really care what you shoot - yer not there to win it, but every putt you take will be a firm stroke looking for the back of the hole, prepare for the fact that a missed putt is gonna leave you a 2/3 footer back.......

btw you know why Harrington sticks his tongue out, it's not idiosyncratic by all accounts it's extremely difficult to tense up with yer tongue out

Lastly ... you don't get to win yer Club Matchplay Competition without being able to perform under pressure.....

Put an empty jar on your kitchen counter. Label it "University Fund." Put twenty one pound notes in it.

Go to the practice green. Putt one ball from random places at least 30 feet from the hole. Your goal is to beat your average # of putts without 3-putting. Every time you do this, you can add one pound to the jar. Every time you fail, you must remove one pound from the jar.

That sounds great Eracer, but Northern Irish people are exceedingly tight with money. The last time I played with IG he dropped a pound coin - it hit him on the back of the neck
