There's a little sadness for me here in SE WI as the WI DNR has recently purchased the two Rainbow Springs golf courses and the surrounding acreage in the Town of Mukwonago, and will be turning it into a nature preserve. I don't how many of the WI members here have played Rainbow, especially Big Mo, but it has a special place in my heart. A long, difficult golf course, 6,850 from the tips when few course were that long, cut through a beautiful area with streams and trees, Rainbow Springs has a long and interesting history. I honed my adult game there 25-30 years ago, and though I haven't played it often in the last 10 years, I was always comforted knowing a challenging round of golf was available there for a reasonable price.

Not sure if it's closed yet, but if not, I hope to get out there with my eleven year old daughter in the next couple weeks and show her where Daddy once played to a two handicap.

It hurts when a nice golf course goes away.

Althogh sad that a part of your golfing career is leaving, at least its going to a good cause such as a nature preserve and not getting built over by condo's or (more likely) a super walmart...like we need another fecking super walmart

Bitter sweet though im sure.

That sucks about the track man..

On the positive side, you can always come to Atlanta area to play, and have a partner!

Golf courses in rural GA have it tough in my opinion. local course near here in colbert (was whispering pines and then?? and now sunrise has been in the foreclosure/bank take over etc crap over the last few years. local realator bought it last and was gonna make it a subdivision- county said he had to keep the course. tried to make it a par three with houses around and still the county said no. (good for me )

But I feel for the owner. might get 30 players a day on a weekday @ $25 and maybe 80 a day on the weekends @ $40 so grosses $10,000 a week during the season. take 7% sales tax off that. but figure that in the off season he gets 50% or less of that. so figure 80% of in season is year round avg so yearly gross is $485k. 7 employees at say $15k is 105K times 1.7 for beni's and employee taxes is $180k, leaving 305k. 50 carts leased at ?? say 2k? (incds gas) is another 100k so leaves 205k. property taxes at ? 3% of 2 million is 60K leaves 145k. insurance, licences, and some upkeep for another 80K (he has redone several greens and does keep it up fairly well) leaves 65K. interest on say 1.5 mil is 90k so he only loses 25k? and this estimate is fat i doubt he does that well. can be a tough business

Doug, as a bean counter - I appreciated your estimate. Do people really work for $15k?
I'd be curious what running a course costs, but I can't imagine it's cheap. Paying for water can't be cheap, even if you're just pumping from a lake or pond. Mowers need fuel and maint. too - actually, i'm guessing they're not cheap either.
I've heard rounds are really down as you get further from cities throughout much of the country - it's unfortunate

and....conservation > preservation

The Wisconsin indian chief was talking to his squaw about the men's annual fishing trip the next day. His wife told him that their son, Muk wanted to join them for the first time.

The next morning, as the men prepared to leave, the chief asked his son:

"Mukwonago?"

The boy jumped up and down, as excited as he'd ever been.

"Mukwonago! Mukwonago!"

So they trekked far north into the upper Wisconsin lake country, got to the secret fishing lake, but didn't catch a single fish.

The chief looked sadly at his boy, wishing his first trip had been more productive.

The boy looked at his dad, and trying to keep a brave face, simply said,

"Muskego."

So the tribe set off on the long journey home. Halfway there the boy (having to match strides with the men) grew tired and fell behind.

The chief admonished his son to keep up.

The boy looked forlornly at his father and said,

"Oconomowoc...."

Good one. Work a Waukesha and a Pewaukee in there and you have more of the County covered. LOL.

"Try some night putting.... you know, putting at night."

They surely won't have any security, will they?

I played there last week, no one was there...It rained like hell that morning so we figured they left for the day....but the sun was shinning by 3 pm.....there was several golf carts left out so we jumped on one and played 18.....I figured someone would show up before we left.....no one did except some other folks wanting to play.

then a few days later we heard the were closed by the bank.
