Talking Mr. and Mrs. Havercamp

The hole's that way, Mr. Havercamp. "That was a peach, Hon". Ended up pairing up with a nice old couple today, George and Fern, but were they terrible. It was a long day. (You know, Mr. and Mrs. Havercamp from Caddyshack.) It didn't hurt my game, though. I shot pretty decent. Kind of felt like "this is how you should hit it, Mr. Havercamp" every shot.

A week ago Saturday my daughter and I played with their relatives, Dan and Chris Havercamp. I swear to God, Chris shot in the 40's. For the first two holes. Took her at least 10 shots to get out of a fairway bunker on the first hole.

She didn't give up, though, you have to give her that. They only played nine holes.

The only experience I hae with the Havercamps is at a wedding. A few yeras back, some friends of mine wed. Their reception was a blast..... (open bar for a few hours then pay bar for everything except for wine and beer.). The reception across the hall, for the Haverkamps.... was enormous. Thier guests were spilling out into the area between the two receptions, which was held at at nice Marriot on Indy's northside. We wanted to check out the Haverkamps set up, and fueled witha little bit of liquid courage, me and a buddy strolled in. The place reeked of money... and we watched the bar for a moment, it was an open bar with everything imagineable... but we left, after feeling uncomfortable for a moment.

We decided to go back in about 20 minutes later, and get a drink. They had little min bars set up all over, about ten of them. It was a liquid recption, for sure. You chat up the bartender a moment as to not appear completely out of place (like you felt) and then had several sips before making your way out through the door farthest from your bartender and back across teh common area to our recption.

So we went back again and again. The game quickly became to try to say something to your buddy loud enough for the bartender to hear while he made our drinks, but to try to say something that would make the other guy crack up laughing.

So, you are waiting on your Gin and Tonic, and I say, "It's a good thing they made it through all Liz's legal troubles and got married anyway, don't you think?" and the other guy, if he can mustrer it, says, "Is Scott still seeing the lawyer? She was hot as hell. I wonder what Liz thinks about all that mess, and the supposed video." If you lost it, you had to tip the bartender.

Granted, it was a terrible thing to do, and we probably added $75 to their bill at the end of the night, but with ice sculptures on EVERY table, I think they were ok.

And we never said anything unless the barteder and us were the ONLY people at the little bar, never when there was another guest within earshot. And we tipped the batender very well, maybe $5 per trip? He quickly remembered us and knew what we wanted to drink before we asked. Eventually, we brough our wives in with us for a drink, but they were nervous as hell and could not handle it! It wsa funny... and atrocious all at the same time. Not my proudest moment, but a story I've told many times.

Thank you Mr.s and Mr.s Haverkamp... or rather, Thank you to Mrs. Haverkamps's parents who likely paid the bill.

Hilariously, we sent a congratulatory 1st anniversary card to OUR friends one year later, from Scott and Liz Haverkamp. Our newly married friends soon began asking all of us who the Haverkamps were, and all the drink stealiers like me had a lovely little laugh when they asked us.

I now, I'm horrible, but you had to be there.....

You know, they actually moved along okay, but it was so painful and weird to watch. Even my eleven year old daughter who can put together a string of bad ones tried to look away. This woman hit a bunch of bunkers during the nine, and I bet she never got out in less than four, and in some cases several more. I bet she shot 110.

The husband was actually not too bad. He probably broke 50.

Played yesterday in the rain and wind.. Course was somewhat empty..

We make it 14 holes without seeing a soul... Then Boom.. 4 carts... 6 people standing around near the green..

I fell asleep waiting for them to putt.. And get this... They never let us pass! Got to the next hole, and the two of us stood in amazment as they were STILL in the tee boxes..

12 shots later and the last guy finally gets to the 150 yard mark, only to watch half of them rocket them into the pond, and THEN into the creek guarding the false front.

Ughh. But hey, they paid, and I paid and it was near the end, so I wasnt too mad.

I played with the Havercamp's yesterday on the first nine holes of the eighteen. They were walking They moved right along though, 50 yards a pop and we stayed with the group ahead (not very good either) who was staying with the group ahead of them (not very good either) etc etc.

Then on the back nine I caught up to two hackers who let me play along with them since it was backed up ahead of them. All nice people.

And there were some very nice, young ladies jogging or riding bikes near the course (it's part of a park) to look at while waiting on shots.

I can play pretty fast when I'm by myself. Walking, I can do 9 holes in 1½ hours. But when the GF decides she actually wants to play (9 holes at most), it can get excruciatingly slow.

I know she's new at it, so I have to cut her some slack, but, DAMN!!!!!

Every shot I have to tell her which club to hit. "7 wood again, hon. You're still 200 yards out."

After every muffed shot I have to tell her what she did wrong. "Uh, you missed the ball, hon."

So, I aplogize to the ladies 2 some that was behind us yesterday, and who almost caught us, even though you were walking and we were riding. No matter how fast we play, hitting 10-12 strokes per hole is gonna add to the time.

On the plus side, she did hit the ball better yesterday. Some of her drives went 150 yards, and that is a major improvement.

Sounds like she plays in a similar manner to my wife. My canned response when she asks what she's doing wrong is "not practicing during the 2 months between attempted rounds." Pisses her off a little, but not nearly as much as trying to help her swing worth a crap would. I just sit back and enjoy watching her stick her butt out to take a shot, then bounce up to the ball 10 feet away to try again.

My wife plays with nothing but a 6hybrid, she has a full set of clubs, hell I even picked up a set of Ping G2 fairway woods for her off Lyle, but nope she likes the 6 & that's it.
