Green Reading Quiz

Okay, there are two greens to compare. One green is very fast the other slow but otherwise identical. The pin is on a slight side hill lie so it will break.

First scenerio. You have a ten foot downhill put on both these greens. Which green will break farther?
a. fast green
b. slow green

Second scenerio. You have a ten foot uphill put on both these greens. Which green will break farther?
a. fast green
b. slow green

I have to see if others find the same thing I do for giggles...

Fast greens will always break more. The shorter the grass the less resistance it has on the ball = more movement in both distance and direction.

Yep. The faster the green, the more it will break. You have to hit a putt softer on a fast green, which will give gravity more time to affect the ball.

A 10 ft. putt? What does it matter? I'm lagging.

Here's another scenario. You have a 10-ft. sidehill putt. Will it break more if the putt is:

A. Uphill
B. Downhill

A - uphill, the putt will break more as it loses speed going up the hill

I think downhill...it will roll longer giving the break more time to affect the path of the ball...

Thats jsut my experience though.

I would say downhill, too. The uphill putt only breaks once it's near the hole, whereas the downhill putt, which is hit much more slowly, breaks during a longer duration of its roll.

Hey, I knew this stuff already... see first post.

Now my problem is still "how much will it break" in any scenerio? I've been having "plumb bobbing" issues...

I had this argument with my uncle, who is a WAY better putter than I will ever be. I said the downhill putt will break more, he said uphill.

In my experience, an uphill putt breaks less because it has to be moving much faster, especially in the first half of the putt.

But what do I know?

AHA! Depends on how much break you play it for!

On the downhill, for me, it would break more in general because I'd be hitting a softer shot that would turn over more. The uphill I'd put a stronger stroke that I could possibly run 6 inches to a foot past, thus to the hole, it would break less.

That's because you're plumb-bobbing with a waffle iron.
