Thread: Number of putts...

  1. Number of putts...

Following on from Bravo's thread...how many putts do you guys take per round and how does that relate to your final score?

Just now I'm taking roughly 32 putts per round and scoring 90 - 95.

I was quite happy with that number of putts believing my problems to be elsewhere. But now I'm not so sure...does my putting suck?

  2. Generally, I'd say 30 putts is the line. If you're under that, you probably putted pretty well. 27-28 is great -- you're one-putting four or five greens a side. 32 is okay, 34 is bad/mediocre, 36+ you need to get your butt onto the practice green pronto and work on your 3 to 6 footers.

It really depends on the quality of your approach shots, though. Any day I hit 13 or 14 greens is bound to be a day where I have a load of putts.

I'm happy in the 30 - 33 range and content with up to 36 (depending on where I was landing on the greens) and not thrilled with anything higher.

37 putts and an 81? Blimey, Woosey, get that putting sorted and you're a scratch golfer!

i did play an unusually good <100 yards game yesterday

my putting was a lot better, ive tried new grips etc but it was just my judgement more than anything i think

still 3 putted a few greens yesterday, there is nothing worse getting onto a 550yard par 5 by going driver then 3 wood, faded beautifully round the corner to then go and three putt :(

problem is our "practise" green is in the shade most of the day, so is MUCH slower than the course, so practising is very hard!

Anyone got any drills etc for putting? im improving but no where near good!

  9. I think using the number of putts per round as a measure of your putting ability is a bit misleading. I have played poor rounds and have had less than 30 putts. I have played great rounds and have had 36 putts. If I am hitting greens in regulation, I tend to have more 2 putts. If I am hitting my irons poorly, I am hitting more chips and pitches from closer in and getting closer to the hole reducing my number of 2 putts. On one particular round, I had zero putts on a hole I triple bogeyed and 2 putts on a hole I birdied. Which was the better score? I think a more accurate measurment would be a percentage of putts made within a makable range (say within 10 feet or so). Number of putts can be misleading as it is more likely a measure of how well you are making your approaches into the green rather than your putting skill.

Base your putting average on GIR (greens in regulation), that will give you a better sense of what you need to work on.

    How do you figure?

18 holes, 18 tee shots. Say 3 of those are par 3's, you have 15 approaches from the fairway. So, 18 tee shots+15 approaches=33 shots, assuming you hit 100% of the greens in reg.

Say you hit 75% of your greens. Leaves you 14 or so chips to the green. Assuming you make no chips, and two putt every green:

33+14=47 shots before putts. Add 36 for putts, you're sitting at 83. Not too far off what he's quoting here.

If he cuts 9 strokes off (25% of his putts), he's shooting par.

    Easy game, hey?

    Nice shooting Woosey.
