Quotes, ideas, mantras, for your golf game...

Any things that help you when you play?

I'll start off, and its a bit cheesey, but...

That second day of my Florida tournament I was having a rough time, for a lot of reasons on, and off, the golf course that I won't go into. Anyway, since I become emotionally invested in my rounds, especially tournaments, I actually had a totally random thought pop into my head, and it completely helped me turn around my back nine, and shoot one of the best I ever have.

"Why do we fall down?" "So we can pick ourselves back up."

Helped a lot, and put it into perspective. Be it in life, or my passion golf, I've found that its not really always what we do right. Rather, it is the hurdles we overcome, our failures, and what we do with them.

So how about you guys? Mine's a little...soft, but as I said, golf's a passion, and something that is a never-ending goal of perfection for me.

Along those same lines.

"Tour Pros hit bad shots... so why do you think you're above it?"

The only shot you can control on the course is the next one. (Put that last worm-raping, hand stinging, skulled 5-iron that would have left an old balata looking like it had spent the day in a blender out of your pathetically feeble mind!)

You woke up this morning... the Good Lord gave you this day to enjoy... smile and enjoy the game! (Just because you saw the note on the kitchen table threatening that if you went to play before fixing the leaky pipe in the basement... Just because you can already hear the "sweet sounding voice" as you walk back in the door long after the hardware store has closed for the weekend... Just because you feel a cool wind blow across the tee box and realize it's noting compared to the cold reception you'll get when you return home... Just ENJOY this game!)

85% of those playing this game never break 100. Your 11 handicap means you shoot in the low 80's or upper 70's most of the time. Be content with your game. (The argument to self used most often as you realize you have to birdie 18... the #1 handicap hole on the course... to card a 95!)

And... the best mantra for your golf game....
You can ALWAYS buy a better game!!!!! (I never liked this %^&$# driver anyway! When I get near Golf Galaxy, next week, this piece of &^* is history!)

limp, are you saying that golfers that reach a certain level should not try to improve their games? Be content with your 11 handicap? If that's not what you mean then feel free to ignore me.

Whether golf, career, family, or just life in general we all should try to improve on where we are. That's the whole goal for leaving the house every morning... to improve. If there was no hope of improvement, there would be no purpose to life.

Each person playing this great game of golf is their own unique set of circumstances. I would hope that most out there playing the game would seek ways to improve... to shoot lower scores. Again, that's the purpose of playiing the game.

On the other hand, we must be realistic. I am 62 years old... bad knees... bad back... too fat... NOTHING works... EVERYTHING hurts!! I know that my potential to become a consistent single digit capper is slim and none! Yet, I live for those few times each year that I can reach down into the 70's... understanding that as each and every year/season passes, those rounds may become fewer and fewer. That's life....

I've seen people throw clubs... abuse the course... get red-faced mad... because they feel they should have shot 5 strokes less than what they did. I've heard curse words that I don't hear on construction sites from a golfer who happens to card a double or triple. The temper... the anger... the inablility to control/channel the anger... can not only be detrimental to the games of those accompanying, but to the golfer himself. It is difficult to smooth an 9-iron to 5 feet when you are so upset your heartbeat and blood pressure are elevated to stroke levels.

Your point that we need to work to get better is why I just traded hybrids last week.... and two weeks before that. Your point that we need to work to get better is why I just purchased another roll of lead tape today. Your point that we need to work to get better is why I putted for 30 minutes, earlier this evening... on the living room carpet.

I've seen both side of the coin. There are those who constantly berate themselves because they do elevate their games at the accelarated pace they desire. Too often, I've seen those folks' progress hindered by their emotion. Others, I have seen REALISTICALLY strategizing how to whittle a stroke here and a stroke there.

I can certainly see how you would deduct from my post that I might condone complacency. That was not my intent.

I usually relate my game to two things when I see a bad outcome. My abbreviated saying
T-Loff - Total lack of f'n Focus
which in turn leads to the only swing thought I ever try and maintain.
"Just hit the f'n ball"

When my game's off, I consciously go back to basics. Stance, grip, ball position, posture. It's like a fresh start or something, and it usually works.

Mine used to be, "Where the hell's that drink cart? We haven't seen her in a hole and a half." Not so much anymore.
