Ball plugs on the green

What's the ruling for this situation? Yesterday, I hit really nice high SW into the green from about 70 yards out. It looked like it pegged right next to the flag but when I got up it was more like 10 feet. Anyway, the ball was plugged into the green. Half the ball was in the green and half the ball was out of it. What I did was remove the ball and set it about six inches to right. That gave me a better putt (which I made because I'm all cool n' stuff). But is that illegal. I certainly wasn't going to attempt to hit a steeply declining wedge on a green so I figured I did the right thing and gave myself the par.

You treat it just like any other ballmark. Mark and pick up your ball, fix the ballmark, and place your ball exactly where it was.

Rule 16c:
"The player may repair an old hole plug or damage to the putting green caused by the impact of a ball, wehther or not the player's ball lies on the putting green."

It doesn't matter whether your ball is lying on your own pitch mark or any other pitch mark, you can fix it.

As stated you should have fixed the mark and replaced the ball.

By moving the ball 6 inches over you incur a 2 stroke penalty and the wrath of the greenskeeper if he catches you not fixing the mark.

I don't know. It's never happened before and the temp was around 95F. And for the past two weeks the temps have been 100+ nearly every day. It's been brutally hot here in the Inland Empire in Southern California. The shot was very high though and should have spun back a few feet.

Maybe it was just a bad spot on the green that if someone paid me a million dollars I couldn't hit again. Kind of like those tall palm trees that are eight inches around. It seems amazingly easy to hit them dead center but if someone asked me to hit one it would take months.

Maybe it was a previously made ball mark, that you re-caved in and added a little depth to?

It was probably a low spot where water collects or a sprinkler was stuck and the part of the green got soaked.

Yeah, it's not all that uncommon if you put a decent amount of spin on the ball and you're playing on a wet course.
