We don't move the ball - we play it down. If we hit a ball and from the point where the shot originated it appears that the ball is lost, we hit another and take a stroke and distance penalty if we cannot locate the original ball.
If - however - we hit a ball and it appears to be perfectly findable, yet upon reaching the area where it landed we cannot find it - we do not return to the point of where the shot was previously played. Although it is a private club - we have gracious plenty members and our pace of play is monitored. In this case, we do indeed throw a ball on the ground in the area and take the same stroke and distance penalty. So if you lost your tee shot - you are 'lying three' from where you hit your next shot.
And this time of year, we are still in prime growing season. The rough is thick and we are beginning to get some early leaves on the ground. It's just not practical from a time standpoint - with players waiting right behind you - to return to the point where the previous shot was played. To avoid this, everytime you hit a ball out of the fairway into an area of known medium/deep rough, you would be hitting provisionals, which you would have to search for. Frankly, I think this would actually make the round longer rather than shorter, but it would indeed meet the rules strictly.
