Steel Shaft

Not so long ago, there were very good tour players (namely Tiger) who used steel shaft in their driver. Since there is so much good graphite shafts on the market for the driver, I just wondered how they compared to the steel ones?
Apart from the weight that is, what are the differences in terms of performance?
I was thinking of the TT TX90, weighting about 102g...

I don't recall Tiger winning lots of tournaments (if any) since he changed his driver to a graphite one (but then again, his putting is off, but that's another story...).

I think the weight is the main issue here. 102 grams is 30 or 40 grams heavier than most shafts. It all depends on the size and weight of the clubhead. If you have a 440cc head and 102g shaft you have a fairly heavy driver. When Tiger was using steel his head size was only 275cc.

I don't know at what size clubhead the steel shaft becomes too heavy, but what I would say is that they can make graphite shafts that perform exactly like steel minus the weight, so you can have the larger head.

That's very true Grazo.... Now I need to find a little clubhead, which are getting rare these days.
Tomorrow, I'm ordering books on clubmaking and clubfitting.

Oh, when I had my VFT driver, I tried hitting the ball once on the fairway when I was really hot and in the zone (I wouldn't try it otherwise)... Nailed it flush, travelled much farther than a 3 wood
