Thread: what can you do with your 60 that you can't do with your sw?

what can you do with your 60 that you can't do with your sw?

I've been doing a lot of practicing with my 55* sw and 60* lw and am starting to think that either A.my 60* is crap B.I am just not good enough to use it (probably the case) or C. I am physically capable, but just not understanding what exactly I should aim to get out of it when using the 60*. I know you're supposed to hit the ball first, but how do you do that with such a lofted club? Mine is a blade style and I chunk it a lot. When I try not to chunk it I skull it. I can only really hit the thing if there is some fluff under the ball. I won't even use my 60* on a closely mowed fairway cause I have a way better chance of getting on the green w/my gw or sw. Is it possible that I need one with a lot of bounce? I know someone is going to ask so i'll answer this now... my original intent when getting the 60* was to use the same swing for all the wedges and let the club take care of the yardages.

I have owned 3-4 different 60º wedges, I sold all of them. Just never could get a handle on them & prefer to use a 52-54º for the majority of chip shots.

I play a 52º, 56º, and 60º combo of wedges. I can hit my 60º about 65yrds full swing, 56º around 85yrds, and 52º up to 105-110 yrds. But around the green, I trust the 60 to put more backspin on the ball for short flop shots.

Define short flop shots. Are you talkin like 5yards off the green or what? Do you ever full swing your 60? When I hit mine right full swing I get around 60 yards or so, but I hardly ever hit it perfect. It's hard to hit for me.

Short flop shot, like over a green side bunker, inside of 65-75 yards my 60º is my money club. I can hit it easily 65-70 yards, if I really swing it maybe 85. And I full swing it all the time, or close to it. I trust the added backspin it puts on the ball to negate any side spin.

  6. Re: what can you do with your 60 that you can't do with your sw?

I could not exist without my LW. Our course has postage stamp greens. And, there are strategically placed bunkers protecting some of those smallish green. The LW will allow me to lob across a trap and stop the ball on the green. The LW will allow me to "toss" a ball from a greenside bunker and see it spin back quicker than if it had run into Superman's cape. I use my LW much more than I do my SW.

So there's full disclosure, my SW is 54 degrees and my LW is 58 degrees. I've had these wedges in the bag, with the matching irons, for a long time. However, I've always carried a lob wedge and have loved them.

Two players in our regular group have tried numerous lob wedges and have, finally, cast them aside. Both play 54 or 56 degree wedges to the same greens I use my 58. And, I've played with many folks who despise high loft wedges. They just struggle and have zero confidence with them.

Our pro shop just got in the new Vokey's in 62 degrees and 64 degrees. I love the look of that 64!!! Who knows......
Blessed to have a bag full of trustworthy friends who have provided this old man with hundreds of hours enjoying the great game of golf.

  7. Re: what can you do with your 60 that you can't do with your sw?

I've played a 55* for 2years and consider myself a halfway decent wedge player. The answer is "not much" but there are a few things. If a pin is tucked and you are shortsided, the 60 will spin a lot more. I spun mine back yesterday from 40yds. out. It will also check up very fast on a long chip. I was on a little upslope of fairway with 15yds. to the green today on a par 5. This green runs to the back fast and the pin was up front. I hit basically a 15yd. chip with the 60 and it bit hard, like the pros do. That was a rather easy birdie. The 55 wouldn't have stopped nearly as quick and I'd have had a 15ft. putt instead of 3 1/2ft.

I pick my spots with it. It's a very useful club if I use it correctly, which means don't overuse it. My "full" 60 is actually about 60yds. with a barely 3/4 swing. I wouldn't think of attempting to hit it 90+ yds. but probably could. It makes about as much sense as trying to shut down a PW and rip it 140 to me though. I have a SW and a PW that go 90yds. a heck of a lot easier.

I can take a four-inch divot behind the ball, instead of the three-inch divot I normally take with my SW.

Is that with a full swing Eracer Yes I can be a sod buster too.

It's a useful club but as stated before you can do the same with other clubs by controlling their loft at impact. Odd part of that skill is you have to acquire the loft control before the 60* is truly used properly.

Exactly, learning to use my 60º properly has helped the rest of my wedges also.

And on that thought, maybe if I get a 64º I'll do even better?

  13. Re: what can you do with your 60 that you can't do with your sw?

The major difference between a SW and an LW is bounce.

SW is much better for a fluffy lie, either sand, or some stringy rough or something.

LW will have less bounce, usually, making is an easier club to hit off of friendly lies.

If they had the same bounce, the only difference would be a slightly higher shot that went a slightly shorter distance with slightly more spin.

    You're psyching yourself out.

for those of you who use your 60 well, do you contact ball first? I ask because it seems like in order to hit down with a 60 you're basically driving the blade straight into earth.

Re: what can you do with your 60 that you can't do with your sw?

I love my 60* wedge, it is the club that I look to use first when chipping. I rarely ever take a full swing with it, but a half swing will get me 50 yards with a consistent amount of spin. My favorite greenside shot is the low chip that hits once and stops immediately and I can hit it far more easily with the 60 versus my 54* sand wedge. I have a 64* wedge as well, but I rarely put that one in the bag.
