manufacturers

Surely there is no finer maker of irons than Mizuno, every one a gem. So how come when it comes to woods they are awful? Then on the other hand Callaway are the complete opposite with their big ugly chunky JCB type irons but woods that inspire confidence from the set up?

I'm not sure there is even a question in amongst that, but comments would be welcome.

Each manufacturer seems to have its strong point. These can even change over time - Ping is a good example, went from great irons (eye 2 etc), crappy woods, to excellent woods (ISI Tec) and mediocre irons, and now seem to be strong on all fronts. Personally I find most Callaway wood funny-looking with them having no hosel and all.

I think it may be a question of the designers that come and go and their strengths - look what Roger Cleveland did for Callaway wedges. Then there are the trends of the time - remember when irons just kept getting bigger and bigger, - which some follow more than others and which don't necessarily work out. The line between good design and bad is very fine and subjective - I'm sure there are a few people out there carrying a MP001 and Big Bertha irons who would wonder just what the hell you're on about. It's a strange world.

Cool

English; I'd say it's a matter of taste, as much as design. I happen to like the Callaway irons, both in looks and the way they play. The X-16's are one of the most popular set of irons made, so you must be in the minority on that point. As for Mizuno, I'd have to agree with the first part, they do make a nice set of irons. They have gotten the best reviews in the annual Golf Magizine club test issue the last 3 years. Must be doing something right. Golf clubs are a lot like women, some guy like blondes, some like redheads, and some like other guys, It's hard to tell what's best, but I'd take Ashley Judd in a heart beat. At my age, I'd be better off with her mother, and considering that's where she got her good looks, that wouldn't hurt my feeling one bit.

absolutely its a matter of preference... for example i happen to love a specific feel in the driver, i like to feel the ball almost like its dissapearing into the clubhead, that seems to be out of style these days. SO, wouldnt you know it, who makes the driver i like? Why Mizuno of course.

You probably right about Mizuno irons. Mizuno players are like a cult.

You can stick me in the minority bucket as well then. The only callaway product I would ever play would be their balls, or the old steelhead fariway woods.

No Rock, I am not interested in a 7 Wood, but thanks anyway

They look like hell, but they play nice. My X-16's were one of the best cast sets I've ever played, hands down. I even liked my 2003BB's for a while until I couldn't hit them as far as i wanted due to that stupid lofting system they have.

But, I am two faced here. I can't stand anything from Titleist, and anything new from Ping. They look like hell and feel just as bad. But that's me.

Everyone has their own tastes. Look at me, I like Arby's...

I agree re Ping.I desparately tried to like the G2 but just couldn't get along with it.

Its just offset and huge fat top edges I hate,so I'm being unfair picking on Callaway, could be any club with offset and fat arse top edge

Check out miura.com for news about the best irons ever made. Fact. These things are awesome. MR Miura used to make for Mizuno, Nike, Taylor Made, the works. Has branched out by himself now, and is talked about in his native Japan as having "the hands of God..." Check it out
