Thread: Water in bunker rules question...

  1. Water in bunker rules question...

OK water in Bunker does not begin to describe this situation. Par 5 hit my approach shot...she a splash in the bunker by the green. Get to said bunker and realize it is FULL and I mean FULL of brown water...tried to rake the bottom...this bunker was at least 5ft deep and filled to the brim with water...give up on the ball.. and partners said to just take a free drop behind the bunker...but it got us to thinking what the actual ruling would be for that...casual water..yes...but lost ball...not sure how that would be handled in a tournament or had seriouse money been on the line...

  2. Re: Water in bunker rules question...

I don't think it would be any different then a ball going down a storm drain or something like that. Long as your in bounds and not in a hazard I believe you get a free drop. I remember at the byron nelson a few years ago I was spotting and a players ball went into a storm drain on a road separating holes on a wayward tee shot. It was still in bounds so he got a free drop, closest point of relief no closer the hole.

It is a hazard, so while you can drop it no closer to the hole within the bunker without penalty, if there is no point of relief farther from the hole within the bunker, dropping outside and no closer would be a penalty.

Unless of course it is specified otherwise by a local rule. Which if the course is not clearing the bunker, and it is a tournament, they should adopt a local rule.

Yes what he said. Sorry I should have clarified... free drop IN the bunker. Like he said as well check local rules... around these parts if the bunker is unkept then we can take relief.... generally.

My HS coach always said you take a free drop in the bunker. If the bunker is completely filled, and there is no place to drop, then it becomes a lateral hazard and you play it as such.
    what is golf?

Actually it would be more of a yellow staked hazard, where you can go back as far back from the point of entry as you choose in line with the hole and point of entry.

It becomes a water hazard yellow stake situation with a bunker that is completely full. If there is even the slightest grain of sand outside of that lake and it is no closer to the hole drop there for free, otherwise it is going to cost you a stroke, as much as that sucks. Sometimes the rules of golf just don't seem fair.

  8. Re: Water in bunker rules question...

If your ball comes to rest in casual water within a bunker, you may drop without penalty at the nearest point of relief within the bunker, no nearer the hole. That applies no matter what the condition is of the rest of the bunker.
If the rest of the bunker is dry, great. But even if the entire bunker contains water, the same rule applies. According to the USGA Web site, "the player may drop the ball in the bunker at a point that provides maximum available relief (i.e., in 1 inch of water rather than 5 inches)." Alternatively, the player may take a one stroke penalty and drop outside the bunker.
