Yoga for the hefty fellow?

I'm sitting here early this Cheeseland morning watching my wife do some of these crazy yoga moves on the Wii-Fit machine. Other than the Wii-Fit machine eerily reminding me of Hal in 2001: A Space Odyssey, I find the positions oddly compelling and rather erotic. She likes it especially well before golfing as the stretching helps her balance and flexibility even though she practices it infrequently.

I'm more familiar with Yoda than I am with Yoga and its practice. Some of the balance and stretching exercises appeal to me, though I fear considerable weight loss would be necessary for it to be worthwhile and to assure the safety of the Wii-Fit machine.

Any of you men ShotTalkers do this crazy Yoga stuff? Is Yoga only for the ladies? Would a full figured man such as myself reap any benefits from the Half Moon, Standing Forward Bend, Warrior, or the Downward Facing Dog poses?

I put this question forward as I woke up early with a sore shoulder and we don't tee off until 11:40.

Re: Yoga for the hefty fellow?

That downward facing dog is a great one for the ladies. Very important to their Yoga development from what I can tell at this early juncture of my Yoga understanding career.

Re: Yoga for the hefty fellow?

I'm not going to give my ususal smart-assed answer to this question because doing yoga has become a criticial part of my overall fitness program. My wife and I have been doing P90X (you've seen it's infomercial if you've ever spent any time on Golf Channel) for a year and a half now and one day is yoga. The entire yoga routine takes about an hour and a half. I can honestly say there is a big difference in "weight training" strong and "yoga" strong. Yoga looks lightweight and "sissified" but neither of us could get very far at first. You will work muscles that you never thought existed. I think it helps golfing tremendously in that it makes you become stronger, more flexible, and balanced at the same time.

The overall program of P90X has caused me to become more fit at 47 than I have ever been in my entire life. I weigh 170 pounds and average 265 off the tee in real, not internet, yards. I'll toss one out there 290/300 every once in awhile and just yesterday hit a 4 wood 260. I am never "tired" feeling anymore. (I am not trying to sell anyone on P90X but it is a great exercise program.)

So, the bottom line is yes yoga can help you. Who cares if you are a "hefty" fellow? Over time you'll become a more flexible and fit hefty fellow and a better golfer as a result. I guarantee that you'll feel better too.

Re: Yoga for the hefty fellow?

Though my post was light hearted, I don't see how Yoga could not be beneficial to a golfer. The improved balance it offers seems like it could be huge, and the stretching has to make swinging a club easier; shoulder turn, lower back flexibility, etc.

Seriously, though, I would have to drop some poundage or I would feel ridiculous doing it.

Yoga comes from India, doesn't it?

So do elephants.

I think for the next Shottalk outing, we should have weight or waist size
classes instead of handicaps.

There is an amateur tourney somewhere where you have to weigh at least 250 pounds to enter. That's looking better and better to me.

Damn, I was really looking forward to meeting some of you one day too.
Maybe there'll be an outing for "thinner" guys as well.
