Thread: The low flighted wedge

  1. The low flighted wedge

I have to say this has always been my favorite shot, when it comes off it gives me goosbumps.

60 yards out, SW in hand, off the back foot, weight slightly favoring my left side. Long slow 3/4 back swing and restricted low follow through, similar to a punch, or another way to thing of it is a slap with the back of the left hand. I don't tend to take a big divot, rather a shallow nip of the turf. And I let my hips and body sync to lead the shot, trying to keep the wrists as passive as possible.

The ball takes off and get maybe 12 feet off the ground. It comes in hot but on 2nd or 3rd bounce the brakes scream on and it comes to a stop on even gets a few inches zip. It's a great shot to play in a wind, especially into it.

I play with a guy off a 2 index. I just marvel at how well and consistently he plays the shot, making it look very simple. He is an aggressive chipper and always gets the spin to hold the ball beside the hole.

It's amazing how much confidence plays a part in this shot. You have to be a tad aggressive, the more you are the more spin you get.

But from outside 60-70 yards it's a no-go for me, unless I drop down to a wedge or a 9 iron.
Doctors say that you should eat 5 pieces of fruit or veg a day to remain healthy. Last week I ate 5 mouldy plums and that night I shat the bed. What's healthy about that?:shocked::shocked:

Coolest shot in golf. I bring almost all my wedges in low. Love the skip, hop, and stop. This season I bought 48-06* and 52-08* spin milled Vokeys. That shot from 60 to 80 works great with the 52*. I hit knock downs with the 48* out to 110 and it will even work down to 70 yards depending on the lie and green. People here are probably getting sick of me talking about those two wedges, but they are absolutely the cat's asses. The 58-08* is the third cat's ass. Second time I've talked about them here in the last two days.

I love that shot also. My chipping is similar, I throw it at the hole and let it hop/check, zero roll out unless the greens are super firm. Once you trust it, getting up and down is a lot easier this way I find

Stop scooping the ball and start trapping it, it's sometimes a bad thing tho - a full wedge into a back to front sloping green means I am almost surely going to zip it off the font unless I take an extra club and swing 3/4.

It looks cool, but really it's all about controlling your golf ball

you guys should video this. Love to see it.
I can get some good pitches, chips are nothing special.
Pitches will still have some forward roll.
Even my longer E through SW shots are getting very pretty great height, great nearly straight drop down, just not stopping enough gotta love it. I do love the short game!

I love the shot as well. Yesterday I was throwing some serious darts. Don't think I hit a wedge over 12ft. off the ground. Started on the 1st hole after making a mess. I had 85yds. in from a fairway lie, ball a little below my feet, shot #4. Hit the SW about 7-8ft. off the ground with a cut and skip, skip and backed up an inch. I made the 5.

Hit a few more using PW from 90yds. to a back uphill pin and a beauty of a 60* that almost hit the flagstick off a total hardpan lie. I was most happy with that one because the 60* off a really tight lie was tough. I kept that one under a doorjamb height and exact yardage from about 45yds..

I love hitting wedges so much I'm considering bending the 'ol 50* to 51 and dropping the driver. I've got a little too much between the PW and SW. I can hit the shots with the PW but they release too much.

Ok so this sounds like the "watch, learn and punch" page 116, 55 ways to lower your score, Golden Bear's book.

is that about right? need to learn that.
    just got the book today.

    Re: The low flighted wedge

Sounds like what happens whenever I blade one of my wedge shots.

... not a joke, I play my wedges back a bit in my stance and when I blade one a bit it is pretty funny as the ball usually just flies a bit further but only about 10 feet off the ground, then stops on a dime. Funny hearing the reaction when the people I play with are going "Ohhh Nooo", and I usually just say "No, it'll be fine" and it then stops dead on the green. I think a big part of the reason I learned to play them back a bit, is there is a lot less chance of hitting a poor shot.

This is my favourite shot, i learned how to play it really well in the last year or so and have improved so much between 50-80 yards.

Was funny in the competition last saturday, i had to fill in with a 4 ball of higher handicaps as my normal 4ball couldn't play last week and all day I was hitting these wedges in from 60-80 yards not much above head height and everytime i hit them the guys were going wow that needs to sit down and they couldn't believe how it pitched up at the flag two bounces and then came back a few feet lol.
Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing.

  11. Re: The low flighted wedge

I should go practice this shot, sounds like a lot of fun. I've only done it by mistake catching a ball thin or something aswell.

  12. Re: The low flighted wedge

For some reason I picked that shot up right away. Ball back, weight forward. When I first started playing I'd chunk a lot of shots so I used to hit my wedges with my feet just a few inches apart, standing with all my weight left, very upright. I used to nail that shot with my 50* wedge, full swing (and you've seen my "full swing"). That thing would sound like a broomstick snapping when I caught it. I'd hit a low cut that'd spin sideways and back right when it hit.
