Re: Copper Face Wedge Help Please

The "copper" wedges of Ping, Cleveland, etc. were alloys of Berylium and Copper. The "copper" inserts used by a few wedges over the years would have needed some alloy with the coper, also. Copper, by itself, is much too soft to ever hold up as a stand-alone metal.

Due to the alloying with Berylium, it is difficult to find anyone who will work with the "copper" wedges. The dust from that metal is quite toxic and requires substantial attention to making sure none is ingested... it's BAD stuff!!!!

I play a complete set of BeCu irons/wedges. I know that if I ever were to wear down the grooves, the wedges would need made into wall-hangers and could not be refurbished.

You may find the inserts in your specific wedges are alloyed with a much more friendly metal. If you do, there are some good craftsmen who do club rechroming, refurbishing, etc. You might want to start with Golfsmith or GolfWorks. Others on the board may have had experience with additional refurbishers. However, I wouldn't plan on being able to find anyone willing to work on the copper alloyed wedges.
